Skyhawks Volleyball Drops Four Setter on the Road to Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. – Fort Lewis College volleyball battled in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup with Western Colorado University on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (18-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-25) on the road. Fort Lewis drops to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the league while Western Colorado improves to 7-4 and 2-1 in conference play.

The Skyhawks hit .042 for the match versus .207 for the Mountaineers. Defense stole the show for both teams with Western Colorado edging out Fort Lewis 81-74 in digs. Sophomore Chay Swenson led the team with a season-high 15 kills and was followed by freshman Alexis Hobie's 12 kill outing. Three setters saw the floor for the Skyhawks with freshman Natalia Lambos notching a team-leading 18 assists. Junior Kamryn Lopez was a highlight reel in the back court, coming away with a season-high 24 digs.

"Kamryn Lopez did an amazing job this match, and you could tell that she studied the scouting report and worked hard for herself and the team. We did a good job picking up tips to extend rallies, and our defensive discipline was promising tonight," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We tried switching up the lineup a little bit throughout the match, and in set four it came down to our team rallying for each other and working for every point."

Set One (18-25)
Western Colorado saw the set's first notable lead, going up 7-4 before a Hobie kill pulled FLC within two. Each of FLC's attempts to close the gap were answered by the opposition as the Mountaineers went on a run to see a 16-9 lead. Hobie added three more kills to her stat line to bring the score to 20-15, but five errors by the Skyhawks closed out the set in favor of Western Colorado. Hobie had five kills in the set to lead all players.

Set Two (14-25)
Fort Lewis saw an early lead in set two before a pair of blocks by the Mountaineers brought the score to 6-4, forcing a timeout for the visitors. The Skyhawks scored out of the break, but Western Colorado continued to win the long rallies for a 12-8 advantage. A strong cross court kill from Hobie slowed the momentum, bringing things to 13-10 before a swing out of the middle resulted in a WCU side out. The Mountaineers went on a run to go up 18-12 to force another FLC timeout, but the home squad remained focused out of the break to go up 22-13. WCU closed out the set with help from an FLC error, taking a two-set advantage on their home court.

Set Three (26-24)
Things were going FLC's way to open the third as a kill from senior Avynn La Rose forced a WCU timeout at 8-4. The Skyhawks scored out of the timeout, pushing the lead to five, but a run for the Mountaineers tied the score at 9-9. A slide out of the middle saw the advantage back on Fort Lewis's side, and the commanding kill jump started a run that had FLC up 13-9. The Skyhawks continued to maintain a comfortable lead, taking advantage of misfires from the opposition to take a 17-12 edge. The Mountaineers pulled within one behind a solid block and tied the score at 19-19 via an FLC miscue. The Skyhawks were on the right side of a long rally to go up 21-19 lead but a quick side out brought the margin to one. WCU scored out of a timeout to knot the score at 21's and claimed a late lead courtesy of an attacking error. Another attacking error gave Western its first lead of the set, forcing an FLC timeout. Fort Lewis responded to the threat, working for a 25-24 lead and closing the set with a kill from Swenson.

Set Four (15-25)
Fort Lewis had a 5-4 lead thanks to a double block from senior Cameron Callahan and La Rose, but the Mountaineers sided out and took an eventual one-point lead. The score remained close through the early part of the set with neither side leading by more than two points. WCU was the first to change the trend, taking a 13-10 advantage with a kill down the line. The lead continued to grow for the Mountaineers with the score at 16-11 ahead of an FLC timeout. Callahan muscled a kill through the block for a Skyhawk side out, but the Mountaineers countered with one of their own to bring things to 19-12. Momentum continued to swing in favor of the home team wit the score climbing to 22-14. WCU saw set point, and a ball handling error sealed the deal in 25-15 fashion.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"Unfortunately, tonight we came up short. We have to have a quick turnaround if we want to compete in our next match as we face one of the top teams in the conference. We will work on ironing out our offensive options to make sure we put our best lineup on the floor."
