Legendre nets his team-leading third goal, but Skyhawks fall by 2-1 final to Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team closed out non-conference action on Sunday, falling by a 2-1 final to Westminster College on an overcast afternoon at Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis (3-3-1 overall), fresh off a 2-1 victory Friday evening over No. 16 Colorado Mesa University, took the early lead Sunday, but were unable to finish off the weekend sweep.

"I was disappointed with how we played (Sunday). I think we were still physically and mentally fatigued from Friday and we let that kind of take over out there," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "I'm disappointed simply because I know we can play a lot better, and the guys know they have a lot more in them."

The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard first in the 10th minute when freshman Gabriel Legendre cashed in a penalty kick opportunity. It was the first PK of Legendre's career and his team-leading third goal of the season as the former two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico has quickly assimilated himself to the college game.

"Gabe has really taken on a leadership role at a young age and has gotten comfortable at the college level. And it has shown in his performance each game," Oberholtzer said.

FLC's 1-0 lead stood until the 25th minute when Westminster College (3-5 overall) capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity of its own.

With momentum on the Griffins' side for the time being, they took advantage and netted the go-ahead goal in the 28th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

It was one of the few quality scoring chances allowed on the afternoon by the Skyhawks, who finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots and 10-5 in shots on goal.

Fort Lewis appeared to have the equalizer on two occasions in the second half. The first being on a header from Legendre on a similar look FLC got on the game-winner against CMU, but his header was deflected wide by the Griffins' keeper, Ian Rose, in the 55th minute.

In the 81st minute, senior Brantley Bice got free in some space and fired a rocket from just outside the box, but had his shot ring off the left post.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne finished with three saves.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back next weekend when it opens up RMAC conference play with a pair of home games against Colorado Christian University (3 p.m. Friday) and Colorado School of Mines (1 p.m. Sunday).

"We played a really challenging non-conference portion of our schedule and we're looking forward to getting into conference play next weekend," Oberholtzer said. "I like what we're doing, for the most part, as a soccer team and how we're playing heading into conference. I still think we need some growth, mentally, in terms of our mindset. We've had some really good moments and have shown what we're capable of, then we'll have some moments where we slip. The goal for the group is to put our foot on the gas for 90 minutes every time we come out. That can be tough on a Sunday after a late Friday game, but that's what we'll be doing all season and we need to make sure we show up on Friday and Sunday."
