Fort Lewis and UT-Permian Basin play each other to 2-2 draw in Saturday nightcap

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team came out flying in the first half Saturday in its non-conference matchup against Lone Star Conference foe, University of Texas-Permian Basin.

FLC tallied the game's first two goals just 24:14 into the contest — all five goals for the Skyhawks over the weekend have come in the first half — but were unable to quite complete the weekend sweep, settling for a 2-2 tie with the visiting Falcons.

"Two games and we haven't lost; it's not a bad start," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "I thought we came out playing really well in the first half, little disappointed we didn't get a third goal because I think a third goal would have buried it. We kept it close and (UT-Permian Basin) found a way to get back in it. Those are just good learning lessons for the group that we need to be a little more relentless in those moments."

Fort Lewis (1-0-1 overall) drew first blood in the 13th minute when freshman forward Tomas Duenes buried a feed from senior Brantley Bice for his first career goal.

Just 12 minutes later, it was freshman Gabriel Legendre who took his turn notching his first tally of 2021, corralling a crossing pass from fellow freshman Georgi Stoyanov and burying a shot bottom-right past UT-Permian Basin's charging keeper.

The Skyhawks kept the pressure on in the first half, doubling the Falcons (0-1-1) shot total 8-4 in the opening 45 minutes and finishing with an 18-11 total shots advantage for the game, but were unable to bury that third goal.

UT-Permian Basin responded with a goal of its own at the 37:34 mark on an incredible shot by Tresor Kobea, perfectly placed in the top corner of the net to cut the FLC lead to 2-1.

"It was a great finish that I think maybe 9/10 times doesn't go in, but credit to (Kobea) because it was just a great goal."

After FLC took a 2-1 lead into the half, the Falcons pulled even in the 55th minute on a penalty kicked cashed in by Gustavo Barroso.

The two teams traded chances back and forth at the end of regulation and overtime as the intensity and physicality picked up, but left Dirks as dusk with the 2-2 tie.

"I think in the first half we found some things that were working really well for us and started to stray from it, let our emotions take over a bit," Oberholtzer said. "Overall, I'm proud of the guys and there were some good lessons to take away going into next week."

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a string of five non-conference games played against RMAC foes, starting with a road matchup against No. 8 ranked Colorado School of Mines. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Golden.

"It's going to feel like a conference game, really. I don't think there's a way for any of us to play each other and not take it as seriously as a conference game would be," Oberholtzer said. "We're always looking to win and that will be our thought with these games."
