Women’s Soccer Captures First Win of the Season in the Battle of the Better Birds

Durango, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team got on the board in the first minute and never looked back in a dominant 5-0 win over the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday at Dirks Field.

"Today it was clear that our team settled in and relaxed. We were composed and it was a great overall performance that proved we can go out and win games," said head women's soccer coach Damian Clarke.

The Skyhawks dominated possession of the ball through much of the contest, putting up 17 shots compared to six for the Falcons. FLC drew 11 corner kicks, one of which resulted in a goal, while holding the opposition to just two on the day. Individually, the duo of senior Katie Smith and junior Madyson Barela highlighted the home slate with the players claiming two goals apiece. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle joined in on the offensive dominance, netting her first goal of the season to round out scoring.

Smith's tandem of goals brings the defender's weekend total to three—tying her season-high mark from 2018. A similar story can be written for the pair from Barela as the goals tie her season-bests from both 2019 and 2020.  Freshmen Sabrina Reyes and Danielle Gonzales picked up assists in the win while the trio of junior Katherine Dunbabin and sophomores Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for a shutout between the pipes.

"It was awesome to see all three goalkeepers have a good performance. Dunbabin is always reliable in the net, Bravin has unmatched energy, and Rosenbaum's communication was fantastic. All three players proved they can be reliable for us going forward," acknowledged Clarke.

The Skyhawks were assertive from first whistle, going up 1-0 in the 1st minute off a header goal from Smith. Smith's goal was assisted off a perfectly-place set-piece from Reyes, giving the home team an early lead. Fort Lewis doubled up the lead in the 19th minute when a free kick from Gonzales found the head of Smith for the defender's second goal of the contest.

The Skyhawks continued to press, challenging the opposing defenders throughout much of the opening half. Barela would bring the score to 3-0 in the 27th minute when the midfielder beat a Falcon defender laterally and snaked a long shot through a trio of players to find an opening in the bottom right corner. Permian Basin managed to rattle off one shot in the final minutes of the opening half, but nothing found its way to the goal as Fort Lewis took a controlling 3-0 lead into the break.

FLC came out of the break with the continued theme of early scoring as Swindle found the back of the net in the 47th minute to bring things to 4-0. The sophomore picked up a loose ball inside the box and sidestepped two Falcons to slice one just past the sprawling keeper. Permian Basin responded with a shot on goal two minutes later, but the attempt was picked up by Bravin for the keeper's first save of the season.

Offensive possession continued to dominate for the Skyhawks with five shots finding their way toward the goal through the middle parts of the half. Barela added to the advantage with her second goal of the contest in the 85th minute, launching the ball from 30 yards out and barely clearing the fingertips of the Permian Basin goalkeeper for a 5-0 edge. The lead proved to be the final score with the Skyhawks running away with an impressive 5-0 home win.

"Today was a great testament to the hard work that our players do in the offseason. It's fun to see them get rewarded with a win, and we will have to carry this into a tough road stretch against talented opponents," said Clarke.

Up next, Fort Lewis College (1-1) will hit the road for pair of games against Lone Star Conference opponents in Texas A&M University-Commerce (1-1) and the University of Texas at Tyler (2-0). The Skyhawks face off against Texas A&M Commerce on Thursday, September 9 for a 7:30 p.m. start followed by a Saturday, September 11 contest versus UT-Tyler at 11:00 a.m.
