Skyhawks Fall in Closely Contested Saturday Matchup

DURANGO, Colo. – Free throws ended up being the difference in a wire to wire 64-62 loss for Fort Lewis College women's basketball team versus Adams State University on Saturday night. Fort Lewis falls to 2-14 overall and 1-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State improves to 8-9, 6-6 RMAC.

Fort Lewis shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45) from the field and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three compared to 39.0 percent (23-of-59) from the field for Adams State and 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from deep. The game's major tipping point came via free throws where both sides struggled. The Skyhawks shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43) versus 52.2 percent (12-of-23) for the Grizzlies, but Fort Lewis couldn't connect in the biggest of moments. Adams State narrowly out-rebounded Fort Lewis 41-38.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria contributed 20 points to lead all players, followed by a 19-point performance from redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson. Sorenson's seven rebounds paced the Skyhawks while redshirt sophomore Brooke McGee followed with six.

"This was an exciting game to be a part of because it felt like a tournament game," said head coach Taylor Harris. "This is a team that can play with anybody, and we encountered so much adversity for the second night in a row. We played hard, we played together, and we showed what our culture is truly about."

Offense was hard to come by in the opening minutes of the game, but the Grizzlies held on to take an 11-1 lead behind a 10-point scoring run. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams and Candelaria combined for three points to cut into the deficit. The Skyhawks remained persistent and eventually knotted things up at 12-12 with 3:32 to go after a huge three from McGee. From there, the teams traded points as the score moved to 16-16 heading into the second quarter.
Adams State went up seven to begin the second quarter before a Sorenson layup brought the score to 25-20 with 5:36 on the clock. Redshirt freshman Claudia Vidal got in on the scoring action moments later, dropping in a lay-up to narrow the lead to just three points. The Grizzlies responded with a 10-point run to reclaim a commanding lead, only stalled by a pair of Candelaria free throws to see the score at 32-24. Free throws were the name of the game down the stretch, sending the teams into the break with Adams State ahead 35-29.

Candelaria sparked things immediately out of halftime, draining a three from deep to move the score to 35-32. It was another three, this time from Vidal, which gave the Skyhawks a lead at 37-36 with 6:36 to go. Redshirt sophomore Ember Cervantes hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three points, and the lead grew to five points after a jumper from Sorenson. Adams and Candelaria were solid from the charity stripe down the stretch, sending the game to the final quarter with Fort Lewis ahead 50-46.

Another scoring streak highlighted the beginning of the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies enjoyed an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead to 54-52 with seven minutes to go. Vidal halted the run with her second three of the contest to see Fort Lewis ahead by one point. Free throws saw the lead swapping sides over the course of two minutes, eventually tying the score at 60-60 with 2:26 to play.

Sorenson hit a layup to give Fort Lewis a lead, but the edge was erased by another pair of free throws. The score sat at 62-62 as time began to wind down, but the Grizzlies hit a crucial jumper with :02 on the clock to go up 64-62. The Skyhawks had an opportunity to tie things up after a late foul was called against the visitors, but both attempts rattled off the rim to secure a narrow win for the Grizzlies.

Fort Lewis (2-14, 1-9 RMAC) is on the road next week, starting with a Friday matchup with No. 24 Colorado Mesa University (11-3, 6-3 RMAC). Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Grand Junction. The Mavericks are riding a six-game winning streak over the Skyhawks.
