Darrius G. Smith steps down as Head Football Coach

1/5/2022 11:40:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College Department of Athletics announced Wednesday that Darrius G. Smith has stepped down as Head Football Coach, effective immediately.

"It was a wonderful opportunity at Fort Lewis. I love and will miss the people and the town of Durango. I cherish every moment and every relationship made," Smith said. "I thank President Tom Stritikus and Athletic Director Brandon Leimbach for the opportunity and support they gave me, our staff, and our players. As this pandemic has unfolded, I have been reminded that the most important thing in my life is family, and at this time, I have to make a decision that is best for my family."

Smith was hired in February of 2020 as the 14th head coach in program history.

"Darrius was a loyal Skyhawk and I want to thank him for his dedicated service to Fort Lewis College," said FLC President, Tom Stritikus.

The pandemic wreaked havoc on football operations and recruiting efforts, limiting the Skyhawks to just two spring games in Smith's inaugural season during the 2020-21 school year after the fall regular season was canceled.

"Coach Smith navigated our football program through one of the toughest two-year stretches we've ever seen due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and I wish him all the best as he moves forward in his career," said FLC Director of Athletics, Brandon Leimbach.

FLC Athletics will begin an immediate search to identify the program's next head football coach.
