Jean-Baptiste, Legendre each net two as Skyhawks soar over Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – You get knocked down; you get back up. Gabriel Legendre and Loic Jean-Baptiste demonstrated that tonight as the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team bounced back with a massive 6-1 win over the Adams State Grizzlies in a brisky Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night.

Fort Lewis moves up to 3-9-2 overall and 2-5-0 in its RMAC schedule. Adams State stumbles to 0-14-1 overall and 0-8-1 in RMAC contests.

"I'm happy for the guys and it's always enjoyable to be at home under the lights on Dirks Field," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "It's a quick turnaround for an extremely important match at Metro on Friday. That's our only focus at this point so we'll regroup and prepare for another tough match."

The Skyhawks offense was on a tear tonight, taking 16 shots in the first half and 14 in the second half for 30 total shots. Fort Lewis targeted 19 of its shots on goal. Adams State took just eight shots all night, sending just three on goal.

Legendre landed the first goal of the evening in just the 2nd minute. The sophomore took a penalty kick and placed it in the back left corner for the early 1-0 lead.

Isaac Garro kept the offense rolling shortly after, chipping it past the keeper on an inlet pass from Tomas Duenes.

The Grizzlies finally got a chance to score, and they made it count. Ranulfo Lopez earned a penalty kick from a foul in the box in the 18th minute. The junior placed it low and left, and although Evan Kowalski was able to get a glove to it, the momentum carried it over for the score to cut the Skyhawks lead in half, 2-1.

After a brief rest and a 2-1 lead at halftime, Fort Lewis added another gear in the second half.

An aggressive tackle that just missed the ball inside the box provided Fort Lewis with its second penalty kick of the night in the 52nd minute. Jean-Baptiste took the kick and placed it beautifully in the top left corner for the goal.

Maximilian Meier nabbed his third goal of the season in the 68th minute, chipping it over the keeper on yet another inlet pass into the box from Duenes.

Legendre, the Skyhawks leading goal-scorer, picked up his second of the night and seventh of the season on a rocket through the keeper's gloves from the top of the box in the 78th minute.

In the 86th minute, Jean-Baptiste netted his second goal of the night and the season to seal the match. The redshirt senior took the ball upfield himself from about 40-yards out, eventually beating the keeper one-on-one with a shot in the bottom right corner.

Fort Lewis led Adams State in fouls 16-14, picking up 10 in the final half of play. The Skyhawks also doubled the Grizzlies in corner kicks 6-3.

Kowalski earned just two saves on the night, allowing Adams State just the lone penalty kick for a goal. Brendan Oberg took over the final 16 and a half minutes but did not make a save. Adam State's Zach Carr allowed six goals and made 13 saves.

Next Up
Fort Lewis will hit the road for a rematch with Metropolitan State University of Denver. The Skyhawks will look to avenge the 2-1 loss to the Roadrunners previously this season, this time in an RMAC contest. The match is set for 1:00 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 14.
