Late goal by Roadrunners downs Skyhawks in final minutes

DENVER, Colo. – A heroic goal by Metropolitan State University of Denver in the 88th minute allowed the Roadrunners to narrowly escape the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team 4-3 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match on a gusty Friday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

The tight loss now places Fort Lewis at 3-10-2 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC conference. The Roadrunners victory now moves them up to 9-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in RMAC play.

It was an offensive shootout this afternoon in Denver. MSU Denver held the edge in both total shots 16-10 and shots on goal ten to nine.

Carrying momentum from Wednesday's 6-1 win over Adams State, Isaac Garro got the action going early. The sophomore found the back left corner of the net in the 8th minute from just outside the box with an assist from Gabriel Legendre.

Just moments later in the 9th minute, a foul inside the Skyhawks box provided the Roadrunners with a penalty kick. Adan Perez took the kick, scoring for the 1-1 equalizer.

Loic Jean-Baptiste unwilling to play from behind provided a goal of his own in just the 11th minute. The redshirt senior scored on a loose ball from just outside the six-yard box in the bottom right corner.

Fort Lewis held the 2-1 lead for just a short time before MSU Denver found back-to-back opportunities. A defensive miscommunication by the Skyhawks allowed Aaron Biggerstaff to create space in the box, scoring on a header just over the keeper. Bryson Chiles was credited an assist on the set piece.

Hardly a minute later the Roadrunners were threatening once again, but a foul by Fort Lewis ended the play and sent MSUD to the penalty line. Alec Rodriguez took the penalty kick and scored to recapture the lead for MSU Denver 3-2.

The Skyhawks opened the second half with urgency, forcing the Roadrunners to defend on its half of the field.

Unable to create a scoring opportunity, Ciaran Feeney decided to force one himself. The Skyhawks defender saw an opening and took his shot, deflecting off of the Roadrunners defender from nearly 20 yards out and into the back of the net for the equalizing goal.

It was an even 3-3 battle throughout the final minutes of play. In the 88th minute, MSU Denver made one final offensive push and scored the game-winning goal off the foot of Jackson Vander Ven. Vander Ven capitalized on a loose ball the Skyhawks could not clear, squeezing it just by the FLC keeper. Tanner Stevenson and Adan Perez each earned an assist as Vander Ven secured the 4-3 victory for MSUD.

The Roadrunners led the Skyhawks in corner kicks seven to four, while Fort Lewis was charged with 12 fouls to MSU Denver's seven.

Evan Kowalski played the opening 45 minutes, allowing three goals and making three saves. Brendan Oberg played the final 45 minutes for Fort Lewis also making three saves and allowing the final goal.
