DURANGO, Colo. – From high school to college to the National Football League, playing under the lights is primetime for a breakout performance. The Fort Lewis College football team will hunt for its breakout game this Saturday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on the road and under the lights of Stocker Stadium.

Game Information
Saturday, October 15
6:00 p.m.
Vs. Colorado Mesa University
Stocker Stadium
Grand Junction, CO
Broadcast: Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Network
Radio: The Team 1340 AM/101.1 FM

"This week against Mesa is going to be a very interesting game," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Johnny Cox said. "They're traditionally a very good program regardless of the record this year. It's going to be quite a challenge, but we're excited. We're heading into their environment and a night game under the lights. There's going to be a lot of energy, but we're up for the challenge. We've had a great week of practice similar to last week, and my hope is that we can really transition that performance from practice to the game Saturday night."

Scouting Colorado Mesa
Box scores and record don't always show the whole story, and the Mavericks are a prime example. Owning a 1-4 overall record without a win in the RMAC (0-4) yet, Colorado Mesa has held its own against some tough opponents. The Mavericks lone win of the season came in the 2022 road opener at William Jewell College 37-14.

Since the season opener, Colorado Mesa has taken losses to South Dakota Mines 31-17, Black Hills State 31-28, Western Colorado 42-34 in double overtime, and 48-21 against No. 21/8 Colorado School of Mines.

Offensively the Mavericks are one of the best in the conference, rated third in the RMAC in the air and ninth in rushing. As a whole, the offense averages 267.80 yards per game in the air and 116.60 yards on the ground for a combined total offense of nearly four hundred yards per game (384.40). Karst Hunter has been commanding the Colorado Mesa offense, completing 95 of his 176 (53.98%) passing attempts for 1,246 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The redshirt sophomore has a 124.90 quarterback rating and has added 200 net yards and two touchdowns with his legs.

Just ahead of Hunter in the Mavericks running game is senior Jullen Ison. The running back has picked up 278 net yards and two touchdowns on 76 rushing attempts. Isaac Maestas owns the only other two rushing touchdowns for CMU. Keenan Brown has been Hunter's favorite target in the receiving core thus far. The six-foot-two wideout has hauled in just 12 receptions for 277 yards and three touchdowns. The Maverick's leading receiver averages 55.40 yards per game.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis suffered a 56-3 loss at home to the Chadron State Eagles last Saturday, Oct. 8. The Eagles offense exploded for 592 yards of total offense picking up 308 yards in the air and 283 yards rushing. CSC quarterback Preston Pearson was lethal in the pocket, completing 20 of his 26 passing attempts (76.92%) for 290 yards and three touchdowns. Fort Lewis struggled, producing just 127 yards of offense in the air and taking a total loss of 11 yards on the ground. The negative rushing yards dropped the Skyhawks to just 116 yards of total offense. Hunter Villavicencio was able to help FLC avoid the shutout, drilling a 44-yard field goal for the lone score of the game.

Looking Ahead
Next week Fort Lewis will celebrate Homecoming, hosting the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers for an RMAC game. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Skyhawks will also be celebrating faculty and staff appreciation day so all Fort Lewis College faculty and staff will receive free entry to the game and the Skyler's Hospitality Tent with their Skycard.
