Volleyball swept by Hardrockers on the road

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 3-0 road loss to South Dakota Mines on Friday night. The Skyhawks drop to 6-11 and 4-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Hardrockers improve to 7-12, 4-7 RMAC.

"We struggled to find our rhythm tonight," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I believe the want to win is there, but we need to find the fight in us that shows up consistently.

Fort Lewis was held to a .116 efficiency compared to a season-best .440 mark for South Dakota Mines. Sophomore Alexis Hobie notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs to pace the team. Junior Lauren Shea followed with seven kills to go along with two blocks. Sophomore Natalia Lambos had 23 assists in the effort. Senior Kamryn Lopez matched Hobie with 10 digs.

Set One (16-25)
South Dakota Mines was the first to 10 points, going ahead 10-6 on a setter dump to close out a scramble play at the net. The home team maintained the lead heading into the middle portion of the set as a block from Shea and sophomore Ruthie Ridderhoff made it 14-10. The Skyhawks were forced into a timeout but struggled to string together points to overtake the lead as the score drifted to 22-15. The Hardrockers found set point with a service ace and closed out the set thanks to the Skyhawks' third attacking error of the set.

Set Two (17-25)
The Skyhawks were able to establish a 5-2 advantage in the second set with a block from Hobie and Ridderhoff, but South Dakota Mines stayed within striking distance and found an eventual 6-6 tie thanks to a service error. The Hardrockers managed to overtake the lead, but Fort Lewis battled to make it a 13-13 contest with a kill from Hobie. The sophomore went back-to-back, putting away her eighth kill of the match to make it a 14-13 FLC advantage. The lead didn't hold, though, as a scoring run with a trio of kills on the outside moved it to 17-14 in favor of the home team. Fort Lewis chipped in a few points down the stretch, but it was too much as set two ended in a 25-17 score.

Set Three (11-25)
The Skyhawks played close to begin the set, pulling within one at 7-6 with a Hobie kill. The Hardrockers went on the enjoy a monstrous 8-0 scoring run to go ahead 15-6. Senior Joviana Romero and Hobie gave Fort Lewis a pair of points to cut into the deficit, but another sizable run put the home team up 21-8. Romero and senior Rylee Johnson each chipped in a kill down the stretch, but the errors became insurmountable as the Skyhawks fell in the final set.
