Skyhawks regroup with key 3-1 win over BHSU

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Double-digit kill outings from Lauren Shea and Alexis Hobie fueled to Fort Lewis College volleyball team to a key four-set win over Black Hills State University to close out the road weekend. Fort Lewis improves to 7-11 overall and 5-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play—a mark that should maintain the team's eighth-place positioning in the league.

After a slow offensive start to the match, Fort Lewis turned it around to hit .162 for the match versus a .110 mark for BHSU. Defense was evenly matched in the dig and block category, but the Skyhawks' ability to apply pressure from the service line was the game-changer in the match. Shea led the team with two aces to go along with 10 kills and nine digs.

The kills leader was none other than Hobie who picked up another double-double with 17 kills (.326) and 11 digs. Senior Kamryn Lopez led the team with 16 digs while going errorless on 15 reception attempts. Sophomore Natalia Lambos picked up 30 assists, seven digs, and four kills for a well-rounded performance.

"Having an offense-driven mindset was the key for us in this match. We attacked Black Hills from the service line which put a lot of pressure on their offense and gave us opportunities to shut them down with our blocks," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Alexis was a steady force all the way around and showed her true leadership ability. This win shows our growth and resilience to close out the road weekend."

Set One (16-25)
BHSU charged ahead immediately with a 4-0 scoring run. Fort Lewis settled into a new lineup and tied things at fours. The score remained close, but another scoring run had the Yellow Jackets up 11-7 heading into a timeout. The Skyhawks managed to tie it up at 14-14 with a Lambos kill, but that was as close as it would get for the blue and gold. The home team took advantage of late miscues on the side of the Skyhawks to close out the set in a 25-16 final thanks to back-to-back kills on the outside. Fort Lewis hit zero for the set with six kills and six errors compared to a .205 clip for BHSU.

Set Two (25-21)
Points would not come easy in the early goings of set two as extended rallies were highlighted by shot selection and scrappy defense. Fort Lewis finally captured a lead and made it two points thanks to an attacking error at 6-4. The lead grow to a 12-7 margin behind tough serving from Lambos and a block from Hobie and JJ Curry before a shot down the line provided a side out. The Yellow Jackets pulled within a point, but a coffin shot from Melanie Smith, followed by a swing out of the middle by Shea held the lead at a pair. BHSU recovered to narrow the lead, but the Skyhawks stayed tough and found a 24-20 set point with a swing on the right side from Hobie. Fort Lewis secured the set when a long rally ended in an error on the pin for a 25-21 final.

Set Three (25-19)
The teams traded points to open the third, seeing tied scores until BHSU used off-speed shots to get up 7-4. The Skyhawks responded with a 6-0 run behind the service of Sarah Wilkey to go ahead 10-7. The Yellow Jackets earned a side out, but quick kills from Hobie and Lambos extended the lead to 13-8. BHSU started to find rhythm on the pins and made it a 16-14 score before a shot sailed long on the right side. Despite the late pressure from the home team, Fort Lewis remained settled and used a setter dump from Lambos to force a timeout at 21-16. The pause in action did little to sway the Skyhawks a Hobie kill, followed by a BHSU attacking error gave Fort Lewis to 2-1 edge.

Set Four (25-16)
Momentum remained on the side of the Skyhawks in set four as a trio of kills from Shea propelled the visitors ahead 9-1. BHSU found an eventual side out off the hot hand of Madison Hoopman and rattled off a few more to see a 12-4 score. Just when it seemed like the set may be out of reach, the Yellow Jackets made it a six-point set to force a Fort Lewis timeout at 16-10. The timeout did well to settle the Skyhawks who benefited from an attacking error to extend the lead to 20-12. Smith and Shea charted kills down the stretch to set up match point, and an attacking error ended the set in a 25-16 final.
