Eagles rout Skyhawks on Ray Dennison Memorial Field

DURANGO, Colo. – For the second straight week, offensive struggles and an ineffective running game caged the Fort Lewis College football team in a 56-3 loss to Chadron State College in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon in Durango, Colorado.

Fort Lewis now finds itself at 0-5 overall and 0-4 in RMAC games through the 2022 campaign. Chadron State secured its first win today, lifting the Eagles to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC.

"That was a tough one, Chadron is a good team," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Johnny Cox said. "Tuesday through Friday we did a really good job of knowing our assignments, being dialed in, and there was a ton of energy in practice. I was definitely thinking we were going to come out and play better but we did not. I feel like we did not execute what we were supposed to do. Dylan Holt was a spark plug out there today, that was good. He (Holt) had a great week of practice and finished up with a really good day, could have even had more opportunities. We just have to continue as a staff to evaluate what we are doing, continue with our personal, figure out ways to emphasis the strengths we do have, and find a way to put together a team effort so that we are able to be victorious."

The Skyhawks put together a strong opening quarter as both teams exchanged back-to-back three-and-outs to open the contest. In its second possession of the game, Fort Lewis drove down the field in eight plays to put Hunter Villavicencio in position for a 44-yard field goal and the opening score.

Chadron State answered, running just three plays for 64 yards and a touchdown. Rylan Aguallo took the third snap of the drive for an 11-yard rushing touchdown.

The wheels fell off for Fort Lewis in the second quarter as the Eagles put up 21 unanswered points to take a 28-3 lead before halftime.

Chadron opened the second half with a statement, picking up right where the offense left off before the half. Jamal Browder in motion took a jet-sweep down the right sideline for 70-yards and an Eagles touchdown.

The Eagles proceeded to put up 14 points in each of the final two quarters, securing its 56-3 victory over the Skyhawks on the road.

Braden Wingle was 17 for 32 (53.1%) in the pocket for 127 yards. On the ground Wingle took a loss of 22 net yards on seven attempts and was sacked twice.

Wingle connected with seven different receivers this afternoon, led by Dylan Holt. Holt secured 61 yards on his four catches including a 28 reception from Wingle; Holt's longest of the season thus far.

Chadron State's Preston Pearson downed the Skyhawks with pinpoint precision, completing 18 of his 24 passing attempts (75%) for 218 yards, one touchdown, and a lone interception. Pearson also scrambled for 18 net yards on the ground. Tommy Thomas, Ahlonte Hair, and Rodarial Abercrombie all hauled in receiving touchdowns.

Jeydon Cox led the Eagles running back core with 103 yards on 16 touches, but it was Jalen Starks who did the most damage with three touchdowns and 40 yards on 11 carries. Jamal Browder added a touchdown on the ground as well.

The Skyhawks defense created opportunities when it could, sacking the Eagles quarterbacks thrice for a loss of 11 yards. True freshman Carter Cameron picked-off Preston Pearson for a Fort Lewis turnover as well.
