Mountaineers upend Skyhawks on senior day

DURANGO, Colo. – Unable to halt the Mountaineers offensively, Fort Lewis College was fell to Western Colorado University by a score of 55-14 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game on a frigid, Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks celebrated fifteen graduating seniors playing in their final game at home for the blue and gold prior to kickoff.
 
Fort Lewis now sits 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the RMAC. Western Colorado picks up its sixth win of the season advancing to 6-4 overall and 6-3 in the RMAC.
 
"Our seniors played very hard, and our team did a good job trying to represent ourselves as far as being all-in for our seniors and trying to make this day memorable," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Johnny Cox said. "I think we gave great effort. We did not execute at the level that we needed to, but the intent and heart were there, I'm proud of our guys for that."
 
Western Colorado dominated the Skyhawks offensively, racking up 527 yards of total offense to Fort Lewis' 235. The Mountaineers found 282 yards through the air and tacked on another 245 on the ground. The Skyhawks gathered just 246 yards through the air and struggled on the ground with -11 net yards.
 
Western Colorado kicked off the game with 12 play opening drive, scoring on a two-yard pass from Connor Desch to Damian Macias, the only score of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Braden Wingle danced with defenders in the pocket and finally escaped to connect with Zach Russell in the end zone for a 20-yard reception, and the first touchdown of the game for FLC.
 
The Mountaineers tacked on 31 points in the second quarter. WCU scored by way of a pair of receiving touchdowns from Desch to Malik White, a 25-yard field goal from Alec Fonseca, and a three-yard rushing touchdown from Josh Cummings. After taking a 38-7 lead at halftime, Western Colorado never looked back.
 
Fort Lewis had measurably more success in the second half, holding the Mountaineers to just 17 points in the third quarter, and scoreless in the fourth.
 
A huge strip sack from Max Hyson in the third quarter allowed Parker Cunningham to scoop and score for a 34-yard touchdown, the final of the game for the Skyhawks.
 
Braden Wingle had a bounce-back performance, completing 25 of his 35 passing attempts (71.4%) for 246 yards and one touchdown. The Skyhawks quarterback suffered 11 sacks for a loss of 93 total yards.
 
Desch was lethal for the Mountaineers in the pocket, connecting on 13 of his 14 passing attempts (92.8%) for 215 total yards and three touchdowns. Second-string quarterback Luke Nethercot added 67 yards on five completions as well and threw an interception to Josiah Flores as well.
 
Cummings led Western Colorado on the ground with 82 net yards and one touchdown, while Braeden Hogan and Deyvon Butler each added rushing touchdowns as well.
 
White was the leading receiver for WCU, hauling in three receptions for 90 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns. Damian Macias also added a receiving touchdown. Drake Cortez was Fort Lewis' leading receiver, catching seven passes for 77 total yards.
 
NOTABLES
-With his strip sack today, Max Hyson leads the Skyhawks in forced fumbles with two, quarterback hurries with four, and tackles for loss with nine total for a loss of 31 yards featuring four and a half sacks for 20 yards.
-Josiah Flores nabbed the first interception of his career this afternoon.
-Fort Lewis finished with interceptions in back-to-back home contests.
-With his rushing efforts today, Brayden Lucero ties Jeff Hansen as the lead back for FLC with 154 net yards each.

Fort Lewis celebrated 15 seniors prior to kickoff today. The Skyhawks highlighted Oscar Oliva, Zach Russell, Alex Motler, Ryan Barkley, Brayden Lucero, Jeff Hansen, Jordan Brown, Max Hyson, Nathan Aguilar, Keegan Hagger, Matthew Waid, James Reyes, Dylan Holt, Frankie Ayon, and Chima Mbaruguru for their continued hard work and perseverance across their time in the blue and gold.
 
FINAL GAME
Next week Fort Lewis heads to Golden, Colo., for the final game of the season. The Skyhawks will take on the No. 12/9 Orediggers at Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 12:00 p.m. Fans can watch the game at home on the RMAC Network or on KWGN Colorado's Own Channel 2.
