A Fourth Quarter Push Spoiled the Fort Lewis College Women's Lacrosse Home Opener on Sunday

DURANGO, Colo. – Playing in its first home game of the season, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team saw a late lead slip away in an 11-8 loss to McKendree University in non-conference action. Fort Lewis drops to 1-2 on the year while McKendree improves to 3-3 overall.

McKendree held a 31-22 advantage in shots which included a 26-16 edge in shots on goal. The Bearcats were especially offensive-minded in the fourth quarter, tallying five goals to overtake the lead. Sophomore Caprietta Abbadessa led the Skyhawks with three goals which she picked up on three shots. Ellie Martinez followed with two goals and led the way with four groundballs. Sophomore Haley Dostie notched two goals on seven shots while causing a pair of turnovers. Junior Averi Basso collected 15 saves between the pipes.

The Bearcats got on the board first, earning a goal just three minutes in to play. Fort Lewis countered a minute later, knotting it up at 1-1 with an Abbadessa goal. The teams were tied again at 2-2 before a late, free position goal for McKendree had Fort Lewis down 3-2 after one-quarter of play.

A goal from Martinez had the score tied yet again, this time at 3-3, after three minutes of play in the second. McKendree went to score back-to-back goals to see its largest lead of the day, but a quick goal from Abbadessa had the blue and gold trailing by one. The tied-up trend continued as Dostie pushed it to 5-5 with her first goal of the day as the clock dwindled to 3:38 in the half. The Skyhawks rattled off a pair of shots to close out the half with the score holding at fives.

Fort Lewis saw its first lead of the afternoon at the 7:33 mark in the third quarter with a goal from Martinez. Defense buckled down for both teams throughout the remainder of the third quarter to keep the narrow Skyhawks lead at 7-6. Mikki Brown picked up a clutch caused turnover shortly after the go-ahead goal to keep the visiting squad out of the offensive zone. Both teams turned the ball over to close out the third quarter, but the defense of Kylee Cosse , Jillian Bryon , and Rebecca Kiyokawa kept the lead in the wings of the Skyhawks.

Two unanswered goals highlighted the beginning of the fourth quarter for the visitors, allowing McKendree to reclaim a lead at 8-7. Abbadessa flicked in a man-up goal at the 5:31 mark to see the score tied at 8-8. The Bearcats went on the score three-straight goals to run away with an 11-8 win. Late penalties and yellow cards came back to haunt the Skyhawks with two woman-up goals sealing the deal on the narrow loss.

Fort Lewis (1-2) has a quick turnaround, hitting the road for a Tuesday neutral site meeting with Rockhurst University at the CSUP Lacrosse Stadium in Pueblo, Colorado. The action kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
