A Four Goal Afternoon From Crawford Lifts Fort Lewis to 12-11 Win Over CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – A four-goal performance from junior Liv Crawford lifted the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team to a gritty 12-11 win over CSU Pueblo in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis improves to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Pueblo put up 34 shots for the game compared to 25 for Fort Lewis. Junior goalkeeper Averi Basso kept her team in it from the jump, though, ending the contest with 13 saves. Crawford's four goals led all players, followed by a three-goal day from sophomore Haley Dostie. Sophomore Ellie Martinez followed with two goals on four shots while the trio of redshirt sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa, freshman Mikki Brown, and freshman Phoebe Ramirez chipped in one goal apiece.

The Pack struck first, going ahead with two goals in the opening minute of play. Dostie answered right back with two-straight goals to knot the score at 2-2 after four minutes. The Skyhawks earned their first lead of the day just 90 seconds later off a goal from Crawford, going ahead 3-2. Pueblo responded with three in a row to carry a 5-3 lead into the final eight minutes of the quarter. Kiyakawa picked up her first goal of the afternoon with 5:09 on the clock, and a Pack goal closed out the quarter in a 5-5 deadlock.

The Skyhawks got out to a hot start in the second quarter, scoring goals from Brown, Crawford, and Martinez to charge ahead 8-5. The teams traded goals from there, pushing the score to 9-6 as time expired in the first half. Pueblo held a slight edge in shots for the half, putting up 18 versus 17 for Fort Lewis. The teams were even with 11 turnovers apiece.

Dostie extended the lead to 10-6 less than a minute into the third quarter with her third goal of the outing. The ThunderWolves scored the game's next three goals to pull within one at 10-9 heading into the final quarter of play. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 12-9 with 9:14 remaining in the game.

With the lead at one goal and time dwindling, Pueblo took a timeout to recollect and attempt one final play. The Fort Lewis defense had something to say about that, pressuring the opposing offense and holding the Pack at midfield to secure the 12-11 road win. The win is a true testiment to the defensive efforts of the Skyhawks this season, with a caused turnover allowing for the favorable field position that put Fort Lewis ahead 12-9. Juniors Jojo Lutz and Makena Carter, as well as sophomore Kaylin Vanzant each earned a caused turnover as time dwindled to five minutes with the lead at three. Pueblo got one back on a free position opportunity, adding another moments later for a one goal game. Vanzant stepped up with with her second caused turnover of the quarter, followed by a Rymerson groundball to allow for just one more Pueblo opportunity. The opportunity, as previously mentioned, came and went without a goal to secure the win.

Up next, Fort Lewis (2-5, 2-1 RMAC) will play in a rescheduled game versus Adams State University (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
