Offense and Defense Shine in 17-1 Win Over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Scoring early and often, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team snagged a 17-1 road win over Adams State University on Tuesday. Fort Lewis improves to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State falls to 0-4, 0-4 RMAC.

The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzles at a 35-1 clip, including a 29-1 edge in shots on goal. In addition to the 17 goals scored, Fort Lewis shared the ball well with eight assists. The team caused nine Adams State turnovers and committed just 11 turnovers compared to 24 for the Grizzlies. Sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa led the team with a season-high six ground balls as well as three caused turnovers, followed by a four bround ball outing from junior Makena Carter. Sophomore Haley Dostie led the team with four goals and two assists while eight additional Skyhawks chipped in goals in the triumphant win. 

While the first three minutes were scoreless, that would not be the trend as the game continued. Haley Dostie got the Skyhawks on the board first, sliding a shot from the left-wing past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Mikki Brown and Caprietta Abbadessa chipped in goals in the following sequence to make it 3-0 with 10 minutes to play in the quarter. The team continued to build on the dominating start, tallying an additional five goals to take an 8-0 lead into the second quarter.

Kiyokawa got the second half going with a goal at the 10 minutes mark, her first of the game to go along with a first-quarter assist. Fort Lewis reached double-figures at the 9:40 mark and added the 11th of the game courtesy of Alyssa Strough on a man-up opportunity. Liv Crawford capped off the quarter with a goal from in the circle, pushing the lead to 12-0 heading into the break. The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzlies 21-0 for the half.

The third quarter's vibe differed from the previous two with just two goals making up the entirety. Ellie Martinez represented the Skyhawks' goal, coming with 6:09 on the clock on a free position play. Adams State picked up its first goal of the day three minutes later on a free position shot of its own. Fort Lewis sent one more shot on goal for the quarter, but the attempt was saved by the opposing keeper to hold the score at 13-1.

Fort Lewis got back on the scoring train in the final quarter of play, earning goals from Dostie and Phoebe Ramirez to make it 15-1 with 11:30 remaining. Dostie notched her fourth goal of the day with five minutes to play, making it a 17-1 advantage. Defense held the Grizzlies without a shot through the remainder of the game to run the clock out on a 17-1 win.

Fort Lewis (3-5, 3-1 RMAC) is home on Friday, taking on UCCS (5-4, 2-2 RMAC) for a 1:00 p.m. start from Ray Dennison Memorial Field. The teams met on April 16, 2021 with the Mountain Lions overcoming a late deficit to run away with an 18-15 win.
