Skyhawks Fall to No. 6 Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Battling wind topping off at 35 miles per hour, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-3 decision to No. 6 Regis University at Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Sunday.

Fort Lewis falls to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis improves to 10-0, 5-0 RMAC.

Regis outshot Fort Lewis 26-11, including a 12-2 first quarter. Shots on goal were heavily in favor of the visiting squad as well at 21-7. Both teams notched four saves on the day. Haley Dostie led the Skyhawks with two goals on three shots on goal. Ellie Martinez tallied the team's third goal. The teams were even at 17 turnovers apiece, but the Skyhawks held an 8-2 advantage in caused turnovers. Sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa led the team in that category with two, additionally she added a team-high three groundballs to go along with two of the team's four draw control wins. Autumn Rymerson and Mikki Brown each earned two groundballs to follow.

Regis got ahead quickly in the first quarter, scoring on a free position opportunity just 27 seconds into play. Martinez countered two minutes into play, scoring from in the circle on an assist from Liv Crawford to tie it up. That's as close as it would get, though, with five unanswered goals accounting for a 6-1 lead after one-quarter of play.

The goals continued to pour on for the Rangers as a 9-1 lead prompted a Fort Lewis timeout with 10:44 to go in the second quarter. The brief pause in play did little to slow down the nationally-ranked foe with a 12-1 lead allowing for a running clock. The Skyhawks earned a draw control win from Mikki Brown moments later which led to favorable field position and a Dostie goal with five minutes to play. A duo of Ranger goals closed out the second quarter in a 14-2 score.

The second half of play was of a different style to the first as the first two goals came midway through for a 16-2 Regis lead. Fort Lewis managed to send a pair of shots toward the goal to end the quarter, but a save preserved the sizeable lead for the visitors. Dostie picked up her second goal of the afternoon with 8:48 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it a 16-3 game. Regis earned the final goal of the day to close it out in 17-3 fashion.

Fort Lewis (3-7, 3-3 RMAC) is back home on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. game versus Colorado Mesa University.
