Crawford and Dostie Tally Three Goals Apiece, Skyhawks Fall 17-10 to Mavericks

DURANGO, Colo. – Liv Crawford and Haley Dostie each chipped in three goals in the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse home loss to Colorado Mesa University on Thursday. The Skyhawks fell by a final score of 17-10 despite playing even with the Mavericks through the majority of the final two quarters.

Fort Lewis falls to 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Colorado Mesa improves to 9-4 on the year and 7-1 in the league.

Colorado Mesa held a 41-20 edge in shots and a 28-12 margin in shots on goal for the game. The teams were neck and neck in ground balls (20 each) and draw controls (16-14 CMU) while Colorado Mesa took advantage of seven free-position shots.

Going along with the multi-goal outings from Crawford and Dostie was Caprietta Abbadessa with two goals on the day. Ellie Martinez picked up one goal while Maren Clark netted a goal and pitched in for two assists in her first game back since March 25. Rebecca Kiyokawa was smooth in transition as well, earning two assists on the day for her second multi-assist game of the season.

Clark and Kiyokawa led the team with four draw controls apiece. Autumn Rymerson and Kiyokawa each picked up four ground balls to lead all players. Averi Basso earned 11 saves between the pipes for her sixth double-digit save outing of the year.

The Mavericks got out to a hot start, netting the first goal of the afternoon just one minute into play. The Skyhawks mimicked the effort, tying it up at 1-1 on a goal from Abbadessa, assisted by Clark. Things continued to happen in quick succession as the Fort Lewis go-ahead goal would be netter just 30 seconds later on a Dostie goal, assisted by Kiyokawa from the top of the circle. The lead would not last, though, with a hungry Colorado Mesa squad surging ahead 7-2 to close out the quarter.

Putting a halt to the growing momentum was Dostie, netting her second goal of the day and 22nd of the season at the 13:42 mark of the second quarter. Basso turned away the first shot her way in the quarter, but the second attempt would ultimately put the visitors up 8-3. Defensive pressure held Colorado Mesa in check throughout the middle of the quarter as a failed clear attempt and a caused turnover by Basso held things at 8-3 with 6:59 on the clock. Basso would earn another save as time dwindled, followed by a pair of unsuccessful free position shots to keep it a five-goal game.

The Mavericks found one final attempt before the break, earning a caused turnover to see favorable field position for a man-down goal, bringing it to 9-3 at half. Defense held the Mavericks to just four shots on goal for the second quarter while the team won three of four draw controls.

The trend of quick goals carried into the third quarter as a shot from the left-wing squeaked past Basso for a 10-3 score just 45 seconds into play. Clark took advantage of a free position chance just one minute later, scoring a goal to see things at 10-4. The teams traded goals from there before a three-goal surge had the visitors ahead 14-5 with six minutes to go. Fort Lewis buckled down and added three goals of their own down the stretch, sending the game into the fourth quarter with a score of 15-8.

If quick goals were the headliner in the first three quarters, defense was the encore in the fourth. Mikki Brown picked up the first shot of the quarter, sending it just high with 13:13 remaining. The Skyhawks continued to press the opposing offense, forcing a pair of off-balance shots and earning a block to hold it at 15-8. Dostie and Kiyokawa had something to say about the scoring drought, though, teaming up for a goal with 8:15 to go, making it a 15-9 game. The scoring chance came to fruition when Kiyokawa battled for a groundball and flashed up the field to find a well-positioned Dostie for the score. A late Crawford goal had Fort Lewis in double figures, but the Mavericks added another with four seconds remaining to seal the deal on a 17-10 game.

Fort Lewis (4-8, 4-4 RMAC) is back home on Saturday for a noon start versus Westminster College (3-7. 3-4 RMAC). The Skyhawks snatched a 17-10 win over Westminster to open the season back on March 4.
