Women's Lacrosse Drops a 16-2 Decision to No. 4 Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team opened the final road series of the regular season against No. 4 Regis University on Friday night, falling by a 16-2 final score from the Regis Lacrosse Field.

Fort Lewis drops to 4-10 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis improves to an unbeaten 15-0 on the year and 10-0 in the league.

The Rangers outshot the Skyhawks at a 38-7 clip, including a 28-4 advantage in shots on goal. The home squad came away with 26 ground balls compared to 18 for the blue and gold. Ellie Martinez earned both goals for the Skyhawks. Rebecca Kiyokawa and Caprietta Abbadessa led the team with three draw controls apiece. Averi Basso had 11 saves in goal.

The Rangers opened the game with a goal in with two minutes gone, maintaining early possession to set up a free position goal. Autumn Rymerson snagged a caused turnover, the team's first of the day, but the tables would quickly turn as the same was done to Rymerson on the clear attempt. The Skyhawks sent their first shot on goal off the stick of Kiyokawa moments later, but a save held the score at 1-0.

A handful of turnovers plagued the Skyhawks throughout the opening quarter, extending the lead to 4-0 with under five minutes to play. Basso gave the Rangers a taste of their own medicine in the final minutes of the opener, causing a turnover and sending the ball ahead for a successful clear. Regis snuck in a late goal on a free position opportunity with nine seconds remaining, making it a 5-0 game at the end of the quarter.

The Rangers tacked on the sixth goal of the outing after winning the opening draw and advanced 7-0 on a man-up opportunity with under 12 minutes to go in the half. Regis won the next four draw controls to stay in control of the tempo with time ticking away. The home squad reached double digits, leading 10-0, but the Skyhawks were able to cut the lead three minutes later. Basso picked up the ground ball on a shot that hit post, sending it ahead to Martinez who beat the defender for a 10-1 score with five minutes remaining.

The moment was short-lived, though, as a pair of goals poured on in the next two minutes to see things at 12-1 as the half came to a close. Regis held a 21-3 advantage in shots through the half, including a 19-2 margin in shots on goal. Basso earned seven saves through 30 minutes of play.

The third quarter was highlighted by defense with pressure leading to turnovers for both sides before the first shot attempt coming at the 11-minute mark. Basso continued to stay collected between the pipes, turning away a pair of free-position shots before the Rangers' 13th goal came with five minutes to go. The Skyhawks clawed back into the following possession, picking up a caused turnover from Kiyokawa to set up a free position play. The Rangers held the Skyhawks without a shot attempt, though, sending the game into the final quarter with a 13-1 score.

Martinez scored her second goal of the night two minutes into the fourth quarter to make it 13-2, but Regis answered right back with a goal to go ahead 14-2 as time ticked under 10 minutes. The Rangers tacked on two more goals down the stretch to end the game in a 16-2 final score.

Fort Lewis (4-10, 4-6 RMAC) will play its final road game of the regular season on Sunday for an 11:00 a.m. start versus UCCS in Colorado Springs.
