Skyhawks Drop Regular Season Finale to Rangers, Look Ahead to RMAC Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – The Skyhawks struggled to come up with the clutch hits on Saturday afternoon, falling in both games to Regis University to close out the regular season. Fort Lewis had a remarkable turnaround midway through the year, starting 0-14 before closing out the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with enough gusto to make the RMAC Tournament as the six-seed.

Fort Lewis is now 20-29 overall and 20-20 in the league while Regis University improved to 34-21 on the year and 28-12 in conference play to secure to three-seed.

Game One: Regis 12, Fort Lewis 7
The Rangers jumped ahead quickly, scoring after a leadoff double down the left-field line and again on a huge two-run homer to go up 3-0. The visitors tacked on another after a standup triple scored on a throwing error before a looking strikeout ended it. Fort Lewis bit back in the bottom of the inning, first with an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Cat Rodman. Sloan Shotton stepped up to the plate next, sending a double to the wall in center field to bring Katie Pippel home. Regis collected a pair of outs to close out the inning with the deficit cut to 4-2.

Runs continued to pour on for the visiting team, bringing the score to 9-2 off seven hits and one error. Both sides went down quietly in the following at-bats before a leadoff single from Pippel had one aboard for the Skyhawks. Rodman followed with a single through the left side to see runners on first and second with one down. Shotton answered the call with her second ground-rule double of the contest to bring it to 9-3. Feeling the momentum, Cara Daugherty sent a sharp shot up the middle to plate two and bring it to 9-5 with one out. The Rangers got out of the inning with a strikeout to keep Fort Lewis at bay.

The Skyhawks executed their second scoreless inning on the defensive end, picking up a huge play by Amiee Shanks on a hard hit up the middle to pick off the lead runner. The lead continued to dwindle in the fourth inning as an RBI single from Pippel scored Alex Tenorio who led it off with her ninth triple of the season. The game moved into the bottom of the fifth with the score holding at 9-6 thanks to heads-up defense from Jadyn Gilley, Tenorio, and Shanks to record three outs. Jaden Blaise Redus shifted the score to 9-7 with a solid base knock up the middle before a strikeout ended the threat. The Skyhawks completed their fourth-straight scoreless inning on the defensive side of the ball to carry things into the bottom of the sixth at 9-7.

Fort Lewis had a chance to pull within one in the sixth inning as a single up the middle set up a play at the plate. Gilley appeared to have slid underneath the tag, but the umpire disagreed at the score held at 9-7. Regis padded the lead with a three-run inning, benefitting from gap-to-gap offense as the final half-inning was set to begin. Fort Lewis threatened but went down scoreless to end the game in a 12-7 final score.

The next few innings flew by quickly with a double from Blaise Redus and a triple from Shotton moving the game into the seventh inning.
