Skyhawks Drop Home Contest to Mountain Lions, 20-6

DURANGO, Colo. – Back at home for the first time in three weeks, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team was welcomed by a formidable foe in the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions erased an early back-and-forth affair, holding the Skyhawks scoreless in two quarters en route to a 20-6 win.

Fort Lewis falls to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improves to 6-4 on the year and 3-2 in the league.

UCCS edged out Fort Lewis in shots at 34-23, including a 27-15 advantage in shots on goal. The teams were nearly even in the turnover category at 18-17 in favor of the Skyhawks. Natalie Church of UCCS led all players with five goals and two assists on the day. The Skyhawks had six players notch goals, including one from Caprietta Abbadessa on three shots on goal. Mikki Brown led the team with three ground balls. Averi Basso played 56:14 in the net, picking up seven saves to move to second all-time in career saves for the Skyhawks (204 saves).

Fort Lewis caused nine turnovers on the day compared to just three caused turnovers for UCCS. Getting in on the action was Basso with three, followed by Kaylin Vanzant with two for the contest.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just a few minutes into play—both goals coming on free position opportunities. Liv Crawford answered back with her 12th goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game with 9:44 on the clock. Fort Lewis knotted it up moments later with a free position shot of their own, this time off the stick of Abbadessa for a tie game. Makena Carter gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the day with under three minutes to play, netting a free position shot for a 4-3 advantage. The Mountain Lions charged back in the final minutes of the quarter, scoring two unanswered goals for a 5-4 lead.

The second quarter was a different story as UCCS flourished with seven unanswered goals for a 12-4 lead heading into the break. Rebecca Kiyokawa snapped the scoreless streak with six minutes to play in the third quarter, sneaking one past the opposing keeper from the top of the circle for a 13-5 score. Haley Dostie echoed the sentiment at the 4:20 mark with her 18th goal of the season to pull the team within eight. The Mountain Lions picked up the final goal of the third quarter to see things at 14-6 with 15 minutes to play. Unfortunately, the scoreless trend carried over into the fourth quarter for the Skyhawks with the game ending in a 20-6 score.

Fort Lewis (3-6, 3-2 RMAC) will host No. 6 Regis University (9-0, 4-0 RMAC) for a noon start on Sunday from Ray Dennison Memorial Field. Regis is off to a hot start this season, continually climbing in the national polls while outscoring the opposition 142-62 along the way. The Skyhawks have never toppled the Rangers in 25 games played.
