Legendre Nets Last Minute Equalizer in Season Opener

ODESSA, Texas. – After trailing for nearly ninety minutes, Gabriel Legendre netted the equalizing goal with just seconds left propelling Fort Lewis College to a tie with The University of Texas Permian Basin 1-1 Thursday night.

The tie puts the Skyhawks and Falcons each at 0-0-1 this season.

"It was a really tough environment to play in," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "They are a very physical team and a have good crowd that gets behind them. I think we were a bit shell shocked and had a little difficult time adjusting. The fight from the group and the desire to keep pushing helped us find a late goal to equalize, and for that I'm very proud of the group. We'll look to bounce back Saturday with a stronger collective performance."

Thursday's season-opener in Odessa was a defensive battle through and through. The Skyhawks managed just four shots in the opening half while the Falcons remained on the offensive with nine.

UTPB finally broke it open in the 53rd minute as Gustavo Barroso netted the opening goal with assistance from Sergio Gonzalez and Emiliano Cardona. Now trailing 1-0, it was up to the Skyhawks to create momentum.

The defensive battle remained stagnant well into the second half, yet neither side would yield as they exchanged yellow cards in a close contest. It was in the 88th minute that sophomore Gabriel Legendre landed the equalizer with the help of Tomas Duenes to bring about a 1-1 tie.

FLC finished with just nine total shots, four of which were on goal.

The Skyhawks will remain in Texas through the weekend, taking on the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals this Saturday, August 27. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
