Skyhawks Go Dutch with Chaparrals

LUBBOCK, Texas. – Playing on the opponent's home pitch in front of a packed crowd was not enough to sway the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team as a defensive showcase led to a 0-0 draw with Lubbock Christian University Saturday night.

The Skyhawks defense had a huge task ahead of them, playing down a man for nearly 70 minutes after goalkeeper Brendan Oberg was called for an intentional handball outside of the box. Since the handball occurred in a scoring opportunity, the play resulted in a red card for Oberg and a one-man disadvantage for FLC.

"For every one of our guys to step up and play down a man for most of the night is huge win in my book," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "Even before going down a man, we started the game very well on our front foot forcing Lubbock to defend. I'm extremely proud of our guys for the resiliency they showed tonight."

Following Oberg's departure, true freshman Evan Kowalski stepped in to defend the net. Just moments after his arrival, Kowalski picked up his first career save to keep the Chaparrals off the board.

LCU held the advantage with 14 shots to the Skyhawks four. However, the FLC defense was an iron wall allowing just three shots on goal all night.

Maximilian Meier and Kaden Schufft provided Fort Lewis's only shots on goal tonight. Bergen Hill and Loic Jean-Baptiste provided shots as well. Lubbock's Pablo Diaz led the Chaps with six total shots including one on goal.

Next up, the Skyhawks host Adams State in a non-conference matchup. The match is scheduled for this Tuesday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m.
