Vargas Scores Hat Trick as Skyhawks Soar Over Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – On a night where the offense was firing on all cylinders, junior Aymaro Vargas stole the show with a hat trick as the Fort Lewis College Men's Soccer team defeated the Adams State Grizzlies on a gusty Tuesday night.

"Definitely good to get our first win of the season and getting to experience that at Dirks Field under the lights is a great feeling," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "I thought it was a great performance from the group tonight from start to finish. To keep the shutout alongside scoring a handful of goals was good for the group. I'm very happy with tonight overall and the progress we continue to make."

The win tonight elevates Fort Lewis to 1-0-2 overall, while Adams State drops to 0-3.

Tonight was an offense clinic for the Skyhawks who out-shot the Grizzlies 23-7 overall. FLC made the most of every shot, connecting for six goals out of their 11 total shots on goal. ASU struggled to connect its offense, placing just one shot on goal all evening.

Vargas began his offensive onslaught in just the 10th minute, connecting on a goal with assists from Gabriel Legendre and Loic Jean-Baptiste. Legendre found the net just minutes later, scoring in the 16th minute with an assist credited to Kaden Schufft. Without skipping a beat, the Skyhawks and Vargas continued to press the Grizzlies, scoring his second goal of the night in the 23rd minute with an assist from Tomas Duenes. FLC ended the first half with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half was less favorable for Adams State as the Grizzlies only managed two shots for the remainder of the match. Meanwhile Vargas picked up right where he left off, scoring his third and final goal of the night in 54th minute and it was none other than Duenes who assisted him once more.

Taking to the pitch in the 55th minute, Henrik Hake provided fresh legs for the Skyhawks offense. Hake's impact was nearly immediate, landing a goal in an empty net after beating the Grizzlies keeper one-on-one; the first of his collegiate career.

In a near identical fashion and not wanting to be outdone, sophomore Jakob Maurek made the most of his 25 minutes off of the bench. Similar to Hake, it took Maurek just eight minutes after coming onto the pitch to connect for his first goal of the season and the Skyhawks sixth of the night.

Evan Kowalski made just one save but collected his first collegiate shutout in goal. Adam State's Logan Rabasca picked up five saves tonight as well. George Valenzuela led ASU with three total shots while Ranulfo Lopez and Brian Ordaz each had two.

Next week the Skyhawks will head to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Colorado Mesa Men's Soccer Showcase. FLC will take on Great Northwest Athletic Conference Opponents Simon Fraser on Sept. 8, and Montana State Billings on Sept. 10. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.
