Red Leafs down Skyhawks in road trip opener

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Even while leading in shots and corner kicks the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team was unable to best the Simon Fraser Red Leafs from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, falling 1-0 on a hot Thursday afternoon.

The Skyhawks now fall to 1-1-2 overall while the Red Leafs advance to 3-1.

"They really pressed us and held us under the gun in the first half," Fort Lewis Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "I felt as though we bounced back well in the second half, however an unfortunate call put us down a man and really limited our chance to create opportunities. Overall, it was a great challenge for us, and we'll look to bounce back on Saturday."

It was an uphill battle for the Skyhawks from kickoff, battling a tough Red Leafs defense that maintained possession on the FLC side of the pitch most of the game.

SFU struck early, scoring in the 19th minute on a goal from Alan Camacho Soto with an assist from Devin O'Hea.

Fort Lewis managed to edge Simon Fraser in total shots 13-12 but were only able to target four on goal to the Red Leafs six.

Simon Fraser provided the Skyhawks with opportunities by way of 13 fouls and six corner kicks, but FLC was unable to string together any offense.

Tomas Duenes led Fort Lewis with three total shots and two on goal, while Aymaro Vargas and Andres Hernandez provided two additional shots on goal. Camacho Soto led SFU with two shots on goal.

The Red Leafs and Justyn Sandhu collected their third-straight shutout. Sandhu collected four saves tonight while Evan Kowalski collected five.

Next up on the docket for Fort Lewis are the Yellowjackets from Montana State Billings this Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. MDT.
