Firestorm elude Skyhawks in season opener

DURANGO, Colo. – With just 191 yards of total offense, the Fort Lewis College football team was unable to keep up with the Arizona Christian University Firestorm falling 52-12 at home on a warm Saturday afternoon.

"We worked really hard to come out fast and start the season with energy," Fort Lewis Head Coach Johnny Cox said. "If you look at parts of the game there was some things we did very well, and somethings we did poorly. Giving up that many turnovers just doesn't give you a chance to win the game. We've got work to do, but it feels like we have a good character team that wants to do it right and wants to get better."

Skyhawks quarterbacks threw five total interceptions while the offense converted on just five of 17 third-down attempts. ACU went 10 for 14 on third-down attempts, including a conversion on the Firestorms single fourth-down attempt.

The Fort Lewis offense was led by quarterback Braden Wingle. Wingle threw for 154 yards, completing 21 of his 39 attempts that included an 18-yard strike to Zach Russell for the Skyhawks only touchdown of the afternoon. Cameron Mack was the leading man in the FLC ground game, picking up 12 yards on three attempts.

Tyler Duncan led the Firestorm offense through the air, connecting on 13 of his 24 pass attempts for 143 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Duncan also led ACU on the ground in attempts with 11, but it was Aiden Quinn who led the run game overall with 64 yards on his nine attempts. Tyrese Gholar, Eriyon Ward, and Duncan each scored touchdowns on the ground as well.

Frankie Ayon was the Skyhawks workhorse on defense, leading the roster with nine total tackles. Max Hyson provided two sacks for a loss of thirteen yards, while Carter Cameron added an additional sack as well.

Moses Smith was the defensive leader for the Firestorm, making five total tackles that included two sacks for a 15-yard loss. Christian Threadgill made two sacks for an 11-yard loss, while Ben Strawn and Kenyatta Kendrick each got a sack assist on the Skyhawks QB as well.
