Skyhawks drop conference opener to Cowboys

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College football team kept it tight heading into halftime, but ultimately succumbed to the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys 27-3 on a hot and windy Saturday afternoon.

"I thought we fought well today," head coach Johnny Cox said. "We improved from week one to week two, but now we must continue to get better and take it to an even higher level. This is a tough conference; we have to play cleaner football and take advantage of more opportunities to put ourselves in a position to win."

New Mexico Highlands outproduced the Skyhawks offense 358 yards to 240. The Cowboys averaged 6.17 yards per play, dominating FLC on the ground for 242 yards on 39 attempts. The Skyhawks were able to make improvements from week one, adding 49 yards of total offense and securing 71 yards through the running game.

Penalties played a major impact today as seven penalties cost Fort Lewis a total of 70 yards while Highlands only gave up four penalties for 42 yards.

Skyhawks quarterback Braden Wingle led offense both on the ground with 48 rushing yards and through the air with 152. Wingle connected on 19 of his 32 pass attempts (59.4%), keeping it clean with no interceptions.

Hunter Villavicencio kept FLC from being blanked, drilling a 36-yard field goal in the opening quarter for the first and only Skyhawks score of the game. Villavicencio made one other attempt just before the half, but the Cowboys were able to block it as time expired.

Michael Jackson commanded the Highlands offense, completing just eight of his 18 pass attempts (44.4%) for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson supplied an additional 22 yards on the ground, but it was Malakai Rango who did most of the damage. Rango nabbed 132 yards and one touchdown on his 21 rushing attempts.

Next week Fort Lewis will return home to welcome Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Adams State University. The Grizzlies and Skyhawks will kick off at 2:00 p.m. MDT at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
