Dominant second half propels Grizzlies to victory over Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – While the offense was able to score seventeen points, the most since Nov. 13, 2021, the Fort Lewis College football team was unable to find the stops they needed on defense, falling to the Adams State University Grizzlies 52-17 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

The Skyhawks now sit 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. The Grizzlies nabbed their first win of the season, advancing to 1-3 and 1-1 in RMAC play.

"Today I feel like the final score, 52-17, isn't really an indication of how this game could have played out," head coach Johnny Cox said. "I feel like we had some great opportunities, we just don't take advantage of the momentum. That's a huge part of the game, we've got so much energy on our sidelines. Our kids are good, if we can just get things rolling, we can really take advantage of those situations. Each week has been progress and we have to continue that throughout the season."

It was a tight matchup in the opening quarter as both teams exchanged effective drives. Adams State took the opening possession 75-yards, nabbing a touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Marckell Grayson to Kentrell Petite.

Fort Lewis was prepared to answer, matching the Grizzlies with a 75-yard drive of their own and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Braden Wingle to Christopher Thomas Jr.; Thomas Jr.'s first of his collegiate career.

ASU continued to attack the Skyhawks defense, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on a one-yard rushing touchdown from Daylen Boddie and a 40-yard receiving touchdown from Dequan Hopkins.

Hunter Villavicencio drained a 42-yard field goal to put Fort Lewis into double digits, but Fort Lewis still trailed the Grizzlies 24-10 at halftime.

Adams State kept its momentum leading into the second half, and soon after ran away with the lead from the Skyhawks. The Grizzlies put up 14 points in the third and fourth quarters while Fort Lewis only found one final score in the second half. Wingle connected with tight end Zach Russell who dove to the pylon securing a nine-yard receiving touchdown.

Unable to contain the Grizzlies offense Fort Lewis fell to Adams State 52-17.

Next up on the Skyhawks schedule are the Thunderwolves at Colorado State University Pueblo. FLC will make the drive up next Saturday, Oct. 1, for another 2:00 p.m. kickoff.

Postgame Quotes from Johnny Cox
FLC Athletics, "Coach first just an opening statement on today's game."

Coach Cox, "So today, I feel like the final score, 52-17, isn't really an indication of how this game could have played out. I feel like we had some great opportunities, we just don't take advantage of the momentum. That's a huge part of the game, we've got so much energy on our sidelines. Our kids are good, if we can just get things rolling, we can really take advantage of those situations. A few different plays go a few different ways and I feel like we had the opportunity to battle in the last quarter."

FLC Athletics, "Coach looking at today vs the first two games, Braden Wingle looked like he was a lot more comfortable in the pocket and definitely had a lot more time it looked like to go through his progressions, was there a new approach for the offensive line or something we changed in the last week?"

Coach Cox, "I feel like when you're just playing so many young players, three true-freshman in the guard-center-guard box, you're going to be playing, growing, and having development. You can do as much as you want on the board or on the practice field, but the game situations are where you gain confidence and experience. Those guys did a good job of growing from week to week. That is what's going to happen, you know it's their first snaps few snaps in college football, especially our right tackle, and those guys are going to continue to get better. I think that people seeing that is good work by our coaches, getting them into the right positions, and I believe that each week they should keep growing."

FLC Athletics, "Obviously the score has reflected it compared to last year, you guys are making massive improvements from week-to-week especially for those who are watching. Do the guys feel that in the locker room, is there a consensus that we're on the right track?"

Coach Cox, "I believe so. You know we just lost, the mood in the locker room is that we lost. It should be that way, I'm not smart enough to say let's win a quarter or a half, and not relate it to the final score of the game. So, we just try to keep it simple, we're trying to win the game. We are not excited about not winning the game, but as they look and compare, they know that we're getting better. Each week has been progress and we have to continue that throughout the season. We have a tough schedule here, the RMAC is not an easy league so we have to just keep do that and we will have some really good results as soon as we deserve it."
