Roadrunners elude Skyhawks on Dirks Field

DURANGO. – It was a tough match on the pitch this afternoon, between the heat and neither side yielding any ground, but it was Metropolitan State University of Denver who walked away the victors defeating Fort Lewis College by a score of 2-1. 
 
Today's loss closes out the non-conference schedule and drops the Skyhawks to 1-4-2 overall. MSU Denver advances to 6-1-1, finishing their conference schedule as well.
 
"Disappointed in the result today, but there was a lot of good progress made on our side," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "I am very happy and excited with the attitude and effort our guys put forth today, especially with a lot of our guys battling injury. Now we have a clean slate, and we just have to look ahead and focus on a strong performance at Colorado Christian this Friday."
 
It was a tight battle on Dirks all afternoon, but Nicco Schiappa and the Roadrunners found the edge. The Roadrunners may have out-shot the Skyhawks 14-10, but FLC was able to limit Metro to just two shots in the opening half. MSU Denver targeted eight shots on goal while Fort Lewis made just three.
 
Sophomore Gabriel Legendre gave FLC the early lead, scoring in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick. The Skyhawks goal leader now lifts his total on the season to four.
 
The Roadrunners were stuck in their tracks as the first half ended in a 1-0 Fort Lewis lead, but quickly found momentum in the second half. Bryson Chiles equalized in the 54th minute with assistance from Aidan Bates, netting his only shot of the afternoon. MSU Denver kept pressing, and eventually found the net once more on a header from Nicco Schiappa. The sophomore scored on a corner-kick from Jonas Votaw.
 
Evan Kowlaski picked up six saves in goal this afternoon while MSU Denver's Ross Miller nabbed just two.
 
The Skyhawks led the Roadrunners in fouls 16-12, but both sides managed an even four yellow-cards on the afternoon.
 
Fort Lewis will take five days of rest before heading to Colorado Christian University this Friday, Sept. 23, to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MDT, and fans at home can stream the game on the RMAC Network.
