Skyhawks blanked by Lady Buffs, 3-0

CANYON, Texas – After holding West Texas A&M University scoreless through 38 minutes of play, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 road contest behind a hat-trick performance from the Buffs' Maria-Frances Serrant. The Skyhawks fall to 0-2-1 overall while the Buffs improve to 3-0 with a trio of three-goal outings.

WTAMU outshot Fort Lewis 30-11 for the match, including a 17-5 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Katie Dunbabin got the start and earned nine goals in a very busy 45 minutes of action. Junior Madyson Barela led the team with three shots, one of which was on goal. Freshman Anna Tucker mirrored Barela with three shots, one on goal.

The Fort Lewis defense was tested early as pressure from the Buffs dominated the opening minutes of play despite zero shots registering on the scoreboard. WTAMU found its first shot of the afternoon in the ninth minute when a set piece produced a shot that missed high over the hands of Dunbabin. The veteran keeper made her first save of the outing minutes later when a boot from 25 yards out drifted into the well-positioned junior's hands.

It would be Dunbabin again, this time in the 13th minute, as a rocketed shot was swiped away but found the feet of the Buffs on the rebound. Senior Julia Johnson made quick work of the deflected shot, though, chipping it out of play and out of reach of the ensuing forces. Fort Lewis had its first good look of the match in the 20th minute when Tucker collected a pass from sophomore Sabrina Reyes just outside of the box and missed slightly wide of the net. WTAMU had another prime opportunity when Asha James took on a trio of defenders and sent the game's eighth shot toward the goal. Dunbabin remained poised under pressure and picked up her fifth save to preserve the tie.

Freshman Josie Coulter created another opportunity for the offensive unit with a stout cross in front of the net. The opposing keeper had an instinctual move and met a charging sophomore Aubrey Swindle to keep a shot off the board with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Buffs would finally break through in the 39th minute when an unfortunate bounce off the paws of Dunbabin found the feet of Maria-Frances Serrant for her third goal of the season, making it a 1-0 match.

The Buffs doubled the lead quickly in the second half when a scramble in front of sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum in goal resulted in Serrant's second goal of the contest. Fort Lewis countered in the 58th minute when Tucker steadied a cross at the top of the box, but a crashing defender snuck up on the freshman and knocked the attempt wide to preserve the 2-0 score. The team's fourth shot on goal came just a minute later when freshman Rozlin Gomez booted one to the bottom right corner and into the belly of the diving keeper.

Barela, a veteran weapon, found space just in front of midfield with 15 minutes remaining and launched a shot toward the goal, but the ball carried just high to keep Fort Lewis scoreless in the match. With just five minutes remaining in the match, the offensive star of the game, Serrant, tallied her third goal of the night to make it 3-0. The Skyhawks picked up their 11th shot of the night in the 87th minute, but that would be the final threat of the contest as the clock ran out on a 3-0 score.
