Skyhawks drop a pair at Chaps Classic on Friday

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite close, back-and-forth sets, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team opened the Chaps Classic with a pair of losses to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Lubbock Christian University on Friday. The loss moves the Skyhawks to 1-4 on the year.

Game One: SWOSU 3, Fort Lewis 0
Fort Lewis was held to a .128 efficiency for the match compared to a .288 clip for SWOSU. The Skyhawks held an advantage in aces as they racked up a season-high nine for the three-setter. Long rallies could be seen throughout the match, leading to a combined 113 digs. Junior Lauren Shea led the team with a season-high 10 kills on 23 swings (.391). Sophomore Alexis Hobie followed with eight kills to go along with seven digs.

Senior Kamryn Lopez and sophomore Sarah Wilkey split time at libero and each came away with nine digs to lead the team. Sophomores Natalia Lambos and Jade Martinez coordinated the attack with 17 and nine assists, respectively. SWOSU's Lacy Mott led all players with 22 kills on 36 swings (.528).

"We have incredible roster depth, and it was evident today when we faced some tough competition," noted head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I was able to try different lineups and mix in some players who made an immediate impact."

Set One (29-31)
The Skyhawks took advantage of an early scoring surge to go ahead 9-8 before a side out knotted the score. Fort Lewis looked to be in system from there as a smooth move out of the middle from Lauren Shea sent the score to 12-9. SWOSU pulled within one as the score crawled to 13-12, but the second service error of the set, followed by an ace from freshman Ella Butler had the score at 15-12. Shea took control from there, thundering a huge kill from the right side to go along with back-to-back aces to increase the lead. The Bulldogs benefitted from a 3-0 scoring run to pull within a pair at 22-20 to force a timeout. SWOSU battled to tie the score and both sides found set point as the game went into extra points. The teams tied six times down the stretch, but a pair of kills closed it out in favor of SWOSU at 31-29.

Set Two (16-25)
Shea got the Skyhawks out to a good start with a pair of kills, but a 5-0 scoring run had SWOSU ahead 6-2 as the teams headed into a timeout. The Bulldogs maintained a sizeable lead despite trading points through the middle portion of the set as the score crept to 12-6. Fort Lewis saw a brief scoring run to close the gap before a trio of attacking miscues had the deficit back at an imposing seven points. The scoring continued for the Bulldogs as a clutch 5-0 run doubled the lead at 22-11.Senior Joviana Romero and junior JJ Curry tallied kills to keep the set alive, but SWOSU made it set point and closed it out with a kill on the outside.

Set Three (18-25)
Romero notched her third kill of the match to put Fort Lewis ahead, but another run by the Bulldogs pushed the opposition ahead 8-5. Despite a handful of powerful swings, the SWOSU defense continued its relentless pursuit as the score moved to 10-6. Sarah Wilkey had something to say about that, though, as the libero for the set targeted her counterpart for a service ace to jumpstart a 3-0 run. SWOSU bit back with a 4-0 surge of their own to force a Fort Lewis timeout at 14-8. Hobie did what she does best out of the break, putting away two kills and an ace to see the score at 15-11. The set started to slip away as SWOSU reached the 20-point mark with the Skyhawks trailing by seven. Just when it seemed the Skyhawks would go down quietly, an electric run had the score at 22-18 off an ace from Curry. The run fell short, though, as tough serving ended the match in a SWOSU sweep.

Game Two: Lubbock Christian 3, Fort Lewis 1
The Skyhawks were limited to a .083 hitting percentage for the match and sided out at 47.3 percent. The Chaps were more efficient in both categories, going for a .203 hitting percentage and 59.5 side-out clip. Fort Lewis was a force at the net early, racking up eight blocks through a pair of sets before ending with 10 for the match.

Romero paced the team with career-high 14 kills to go along with five digs. Junior JJ Curry followed with a career-high of her own at 11 kills in her first start as a Skyhawk. The top defender for the match was Shea who protected the right back with 18 digs to lead all players. Butler added defense at the net with a career-high six blocks. Lambos dished 30 assists to seven players throughout the match.

"JJ brought a lot of position energy and momentum to the court. Her attitude ignited the team, and she was a steady force on the outside," recognized Tarnauskaite. "Ella continues to establish herself as a true competitor and was a presence with her block. Another player who stood out was Sarah Wilkey. Teams are targeting us on serve receive, and her incredible vision of the court and ability to read was a huge difference for us."

Set One: Lubbock Christian 25, Fort Lewis 14
Lubbock controlled the early portion of the set, going ahead 7-2 on a crafty setter dump before an attacking error provided a side out. Sophomore  Chay Swenson added her first kill of the tournament on the outside to make it 11-6, but the Skyhawks struggled to string points together as the team fell behind by eight. Butler and Shea combined for a pair of blocks to narrow the deficit, but the diverse offense of the Chaps was too much to overcome as the Skyhawks fell by a 25-14 final.

Set Two: Fort Lewis 25, Lubbock Christian 17
Curry created separation with a kill and service ae to make it 5-3 in set two—the largest lead for Fort Lewis through the match. The run continued with a Romero kill and block from Butler and Lambos making it 7-3. Lambos added insult to injury with a no-look dump to the left front to extend the lead to 11-4 and force an LCU timeout. Romero lifted the team to a 15-9 score with her sixth kill of the match finding space down the line. The Chaps closed the gap as the set wore on, but errors on the home squad allowed the Skyhawks to jump ahead 21-15. Sophomore Ruthie Ridderhoff made it sent point with a monstrous solo block before the team closed it out.

Set Three: Lubbock Christian 25, Fort Lewis 19
Fort Lewis earned a sizable lead to open the third set, but a 3-0 scoring run had the Chaps within a pair at 8-6. LCU turned it around to take the lead at 10-9 with a commanding kill down the line before Romero's ninth kill swiped off the block for another tied score. LCU's block showed up in the midst of a 5-0 scoring run as back-to-back rejections turned in a Fort Lewis timeout at 17-12. Errors allowed for an extended lead, and an eventual kill out of the middle ended the set in a 25-19 score.

Set Four: Lubbock Christian 25, Fort Lewis 15
Romero made it a 7-3 set with a savvy kill through a narrow seam on the right side, but a quick side out held the lead for LCU. Butler found her rhythm after a slow start to the match, placing a pair of kills out of the middle to make it an 18-11 score in favor of the Chaps. Errors were too prominent for the Skyhawks down the stretch as the Chaps moved to find match point. Kills from senior Rylee Johnson and Shea held off the match's end, but an eventual service error put the nail in the coffin.

"It's tough to bounce back after a loss, but this team is resilient. Our focus will be taking care of details and continuing to show up and fight," ended Tarnauskaite.
