Skyhawks travel to Cougars, Orediggers to open conference schedule

DURANGO, Colo. – With a tough non-conference schedule now behind them, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team is prepared to take on the Colorado Christian University Cougars and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers to begin the sprint through their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Schedule.

"We're looking forward to starting conference play with a clean slate," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "I like the progress that we've made across last week. Although we may not be seeing the results we want, there is progress being made and we can see these guys adapting and growing week to week."
 
Scouting Colorado Christian
Colorado Christian boasts a 4-2-2 overall record this season after suffering a loss to University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 2-0 last Sunday. The Cougars have faced talented teams from across the region, besting St. Cloud State University 3-0, Southwest Baptist University 3-1, and tying with Dallas Baptist University and Newman University 0-0.
 
Averaging 1.50 goals per game as a squad, Colorado Christian sits in the middle of the RMAC in scoring. Adrian Diez is the Cougars top scorer with four goals this season. The sophomore has scored his four goals on just five shots on goal to accompany two assists. In goal for CCU stands junior Michel Pinoncely. Pinoncely has made five starts, making four saves and allowing two goals for a 0.741 save percentage and 0.88 goals against.
 
Scouting Colorado School of Mines
The Orediggers from Colorado School of Mines own a 3-3-2 overall record this season after picking up a 2-1 win over Westminster College. Colorado Mines had a mix of success in their non-conference schedule, picking up regional wins against Seattle Pacific University 2-0, San Francisco State University 2-0, and ties with No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona and California State San Bernardino. Prior to taking on the Skyhawks, the Orediggers will take on the Adams State University Grizzlies on Friday, Sept. 23.
 
Tristan Semelsberger leads the Orediggers with four goals on the season. Azad Iliozer and Michael Spraur have each added two goals as well. As a unit Colorado Mines has scored eleven goals this season averaging 1.38 to their opponents 1.50. Brian Doherty has been defending the net for the Orediggers, starting all seven of his appearances. The graduate student from Seattle, Wash., has picked up 17 saves thus far and allowed 11 total goals.
 
Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is coming off a tough pair of close non-conference losses to fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents Regis University and Metropolitan State University of Denver. The Skyhawks fell by a score of 2-1 in both matches after holding a 1-0 lead before halftime. Gabriel Legendre was the FLC offensive leader in both matches, scoring each goal within the first twenty-three minutes of the opening half.
 
Skyhawks Leaders
Legendre stands as the sole leader of the Skyhawks offense. The sophomore owns four goals this far with a pair of assists to accompany them. Legendre has scored his four goals on just eight shots on goal. Aymaro Vargas trails Legendre with three goals to his name, however he has yet to nab an assist. Tomas Duenes has been a threat inside the box all season for Fort Lewis. The sophomore has taken just three shots on goal but has found three assists for FLC. Evan Kowalski has been defended the goal for the Skyhawks. The true freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., has allowed six goals thus far while making 32 saves. Kowalski has a 0.842 save percentage and has made one shutout this year.
 
Looking Ahead
Following the pair of conference-opening games this weekend, Fort Lewis will return to Durango, Colo., for a two-game home stand. The Skyhawks will welcome Colorado Mesa on Friday, Sept. 30, and Westminster (Utah) on Sunday, Oct. 2. Friday's game will kick off under the lights at 7:00 p.m. while Sunday's game will be a 1:30 p.m. afternoon start.
