Orediggers edge Skyhawks 3-1

GOLDEN, Colo. – Shots on goal is the name of the game. After a physical and hard fought ninety minutes, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team just could not find the edge they needed to break through the Colorado School of Mines defense, falling by a score of 3-1 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest early Sunday afternoon.

Today's loss now puts the Skyhawks at 1-6-2 overall and 0-2 through the RMAC schedule. The Orediggers now sit at 5-3-2 overall and 2-0 to begin their RMAC schedule.

"We know we are in a tough spot in terms of the number of available, healthy players we have had over the last few weeks," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "It is a challenging situation, but I could not be prouder of how the guys continue to show up. The string of results certainly stings but these guys are making progress in ways that do not currently reflect on the scoreboard."

Mines out-shot Fort Lewis 24-6. Taking 10 shots in the first half and 14 in the second, Colorado School of Mines held the Skyhawks on their heels all afternoon. FLC took five shots in the opening half and just one shot in the second half.

Taking just one shot on goal this afternoon it was Isaac Garro able to connect. Garro scored in the 19th minute by himself after the Orediggers were unable to clear the ball from the top of the box.

Garro's goal provided Fort Lewis with the early lead, and the Skyhawks were able to fend off Mines until the 37th minute. Michael Sprauer netted his third goal of the season thus far, receiving assistance from Lucas King for the 1-1 equalizer.

Evan Kowalski fought hard to keep Mines out of the net, picking up six saves on the afternoon that included a phenomenal save diving to the right post off of a Mines header in the box.

The Orediggers pulled away in the final twenty minutes of the match, scoring goal number two from Tristian Semelsberger in the 79th minute. Mines dealt the finishing blow in the 88th minute with the third and final goal of the afternoon off the foot of Chris Seery with an assist from Tristian Semelsberger.

Unable to find more than a single shot on goal, Fort Lewis fell to Colorado School of Mines 3-1.
