Duenes, Legendre lead Skyhawks to first conference win over Mavericks

DURANGO, Colo. – In a physical, offensive shootout it was a pair of goals by Gabriel Legendre and Tomas Duenes that lifted the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season over the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks by a score of 2-1 Friday night.

The Skyhawks advance to 2-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the RMAC. The loss drops the Mavericks to 5-4-1 overall this season and 1-2-1 in conference contests.

"First off tonight was such an awesome environment with the crowd and the energy," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer said. "I think the energy really helped push our guys for all ninety minutes. I cannot express how I proud I am of these guys. It has been a difficult string of results, but they've continued to show up, continued to fight, and tonight they finally got their reward. I thought we played well, scored some good goals, and even had a few opportunities to score a few more. Now we prepare and move on to Sunday."

Legendre, the Skyhawks leading goal scorer, got hot and did damage early. The sophomore found the back of the net in the 13th minute after Duenes and Isaac Garro found him in the box for the easy score alongside a pair of assists.

Fort Lewis wouldn't let up, and Duenes found his first goal of the season shortly after in the 20th minute. The sophomore landed a beautiful header just above the penalty kick line to the back right corner of the net. Garro picked up his second assist of the night on the goal, sending a cross from the far-right sideline.

Colorado Mesa couldn't find life until well into the second half. The Mavericks and Skyhawks took an equal ten shots in the opening half, but only Fort Lewis was able to find the net.

In the 68th minute Colorado Mesa finally found the goal. David Peters planted a header of his own in the back left corner of the net on a corner kick from Leo Mireles.

Unable to find an equalizer, the Mavericks fell 2-1 to the Skyhawks.

Evan Kowalski provided Fort Lewis with a phenomenal night in goal. The true freshman picked up six saves, leaving his feet on several spectacular occasions to hold back Colorado Mesa.

Mavericks goalkeeper Connor Durant nabbed four saves on the night.

Colorado Mesa out-shot Fort Lewis 21-17 overall and 7-6 in shots on goal. Additionally, CMU led in corner kicks 9-2 while the Skyhawks led only in total fouls 12-5.

Henrik Hake and Ciaran Feeney each picked up yellow cards alongside Colton Shafer for the Mavericks.

The Skyhawks are right back in action this Sunday, Oct. 2, as they host Westminster College for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at 1:30 p.m. on Dirks Field.
