Trio of goals lifts Griffins over Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – Momentum is a powerful tool, and when it is harnessed, it can sway the outcome of a game. After an electric performance Friday night, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team was unable to keep its momentum and fell to the Westminster College (Utah) Griffins by a score of 3-0 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match on a chilly Sunday afternoon.

Fort Lewis now sits at 2-7-2 overall and 1-3-0 in RMAC contests. Westminster moves up to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference matches.

"Disappointed in the result today," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "We played well on Friday and took some positive steps forward, but today really showed our teams lack of maturity and discipline from start to finish. One of the signs of a mature team is to have a good performance, and then follow it up with another good performance. Disappointed we could not do that today, but it gives us some direction as far as things that need to be corrected."

The Griffins held the momentum from the get-go, forcing Fort Lewis to defend on its own half of the pitch for a majority of the contest. Misfortune struck in the 11th minute as Luke Merrill found the back of the net on a loose ball near the top of the box for the Westminster goal.

Merrill struck once more just into the beginning of the second half, netting his second goal of the afternoon in the 50th minute by himself as he evaded several Skyhawks near the top of the box.

Westminster tallied on its third and final goal of the day in the 81st minute to seal the game. Jack Cardwell was able to land a header in the back left corner of the net on a free kick Jace Vance nearly thirty yards up the right sideline.

Evan Kowalski and Roark Looney were even in saves with three each. The win today gives Looney his second shutout of the season.

Isaac Garro led Fort Lewis with six total shots, two of which were on goal. Luke Merrill and Jack Cardwell each had three shots with two shots on goal for Westminster as well.

The Griffins led the Skyhawks in total 15-14 and shots on goal 6-3. Additionally, Westminster also led in corner kicks 4-2 and total fouls 15-14.

Yellow cards were issued to Fort Lewis's Maximilian Meier, Tomas Duenes, Daniel Coronado Morales, and Westminster's Cole Kartchner.
