Skyhawks slated to take on Red Leafs, Yellowjackets at Colorado Mesa Kickoff Weekend sponsored by DoubleTree by Hilton

DURANGO, Colo. – After a dominant win at home last week the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team is headed to Grand Junction, Colorado, for non-conference matches with Great Northwest Athletic Conference members Simon Fraser University and Montana State University Billings.

"The focus still remains squarely on us," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "We're still in the process of learning about ourselves and finding small ways to improve each week. We've got two good opponents this week and it will be another great test before we move into conference play."

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks have enjoyed the well-deserved week of rest after a commanding win over Adams State at home. Aymaro Vargas led the charge against the Grizzlies, earning his first career hat-trick with goals in the 11th, 24th, and 55th minutes. FLC held ASU to just seven shots all night, including just a single shot on goal that was saved with ease by freshman goalkeeper Evan Kowalski who also nabbed his first career shutout. Henrik Hake and Jakob Maurek each scored their first career collegiate goals while Gabriel Legendre scored his second of the season.

Scouting Simon Fraser
Simon Fraser will debut its new look this Saturday as the university unveiled its new varsity team name last Tuesday. "Red Leafs" will be the new look for SFU, honoring the logo and image that the university has stood behind throughout the years of competition as Canada's only NCAA institution.

The Red Leafs kicked off their 2022 campaign playing host to the defending National Champions California State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. While SFU fell 1-0 to the Golden Eagles, they allowed just the one goal on a total of 23 shots which included nine on goal. Simon Fraser bounced back the following week, defeating Sonoma State 2-0 and Chico State 1-0 in a quick California road trip.

Scouting Montana State Billings
The Yellowjackets of MSUB have gotten off to shaky start in 2022. Following the cancelation of their home-opener, the 'Jackets moved on to host Colorado State University Pueblo and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for the 7th annual Rimrock Classic.

Montana State Billings kicked off the season with a close match against the Thunderwolves of CSUP. The Yellowjackets offense struggled, taking just two shots all game compared to the Thunderwolves 15. It was junior goalkeeper Jeremi Campagnolo who kept the 'Jackets in the match, securing eight saves and allowing just one goal in the 65th minute. MSUB then advanced to take on the Mountain Lions from Colorado Springs but could not manage a similar fight, falling 3-0.

Skyhawks Leaders
After his performance against Adams State, Vargas now leads FLC with three goals on the season. Legendre trails just behind with two goals to his name alongside two assists. Maurek and Hake now trail the leading duo with a single goal each, while Tomas Duenes leads all Skyhawks with three assists. After jumping into action last Tuesday, Joseph Butzke, Isaac Garro, Loic Jean-Baptiste, and Kaden Schufft all picked up their first assists of the season as well.

Up Next

Fort Lewis will then make a quick turnaround back home for a non-conference match against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Sunday, Sept. 18.
