Cougars force draw on Skyhawks’ home pitch

DURANGO, Colo. – Junior Tomas Duenes struck early on a stunning free kick to put the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (5-2-2, 1-0-1 RMAC) in the driver's seat, but a relentless attack from Colorado Christian University (3-2-4, 1-0-1 RMAC) ultimately resulted in a 1-1 draw in Sunday afternoons Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup on Dirks Field.

"I thought we definitely created plenty of chances, but we just couldn't take advantage of them," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "We were in control throughout the first half and created many opportunities. But in the second half, we got sloppy and allowed them to get back in the game. We just need to start taking advantage of the opportunities we've created early in matches."

Fort Lewis edged Colorado Christian five shots to four in the opening half, but the Cougars' offense would roar back with six shots across the second half to the Skyhawks' two. Both sides were even with 12 fouls and two corner kicks.

Duenes lifted FLC to its 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. A foul provided the Skyhawks with a free kick and after lining up the wall, Duenes lifted the ball up and left beating Colorado Christian's Michel Pinoncely to the post. Pinoncely went on to save the only other shot on goal.

After emerging from the intermission with a one-goal deficit the Cougars began to dominate both possession and pace of play. Forcing Fort Lewis into its own half and box on multiple occasions, luck finally struck in the 61st minute.

The Cougars earned a corner kick on a deflection off a Skyhawks defender in the box. On the ensuing kick, Lucas Martin elevated to his right for an expert save on the first shot, however, the untimely deflection off his gloves found CCU's Caiden Dixon who split two diving defenders for the game-saving goal.

Notables
-Duenes' goal marks the third of this season, the 11th of his career, and the second in as many games.
-The Skyhawks' two corner kicks, seven shots, and two shots on goal are all the fewest in any game this season.
