Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hayden Mangan, Athletic Communications Assistant

Larson, Citron each net first goal of the season in decisive win over Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Jakob Larson and David Citron each found the back of the net for the first time this season as the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (6-2-2, 2-0-1 RMAC) rolled past South Dakota School of Mines (2-9, 0-3 RMAC) 4-1 to remain unbeaten through its first three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests of the season.

"We scored the early goal and as nice as it was to take the lead we had, I thought we had a handful of opportunities to score a few more," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer commented. "There is still a lot of room to grow and improve. We need to start taking advantage of the chances we're provided before other teams start to punish us for it. This Sunday will be a different challenge for us and if we don't capitalize on those opportunities, we'll risk being on the losing end."

Larson and Fort Lewis set the tone early with a goal just 1:59 into the match. Tomas Duenes provided a set piece on a corner from the left side and an unchecked Larson flew in from the backside and headed the ball inside the right post.

Later in the half, Kaden Schufft drove into the box, spun past his defender, and provided service to the middle where Citron outpaced his defender to the penalty line and chipped in his goal with ease.

Trailing 0-2 out of the intermission, South Dakota finally captured a share of momentum as they held FLC in its own defensive third to open the second half. Aydon Ellis provided service into the FLC box in the 62nd minute where Zach Peroff got inside of his defender and found the back of the net with a header of his own.

Late in the half, Anton Hjalmarsson began to beat the Hardrockers' defense with ease, and in the 81st minute, Hjalmarsson won a 50-50 ball forty yards out and beat the back line to the box before cutting left and striking to the back of the net for an insurance goal. Hjalmarsson beat the defense once more in the 85th minute on nearly a 40-yard service pass from Larson and then found a wide-open Emmett Layman at the penalty line who slammed the door shut with a goal of his own.
