Women's soccer to face No. 4 Mavericks and Griffins in Homecoming celebration

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team is back on Dirks Field this week for a pair of Homecoming matches against No. 5 Colorado Mesa University and Westminster University.

First, the team will face the Mavericks for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, followed by a noon match against the Griffins on Sunday.

Last Time Out            
Fort Lewis picked up a tie last Thursday against No. 16 Colorado School of Mines despite being outshot 27-5 for the match. The teams combined for 18 fouls. The senior goalkeeper duo of Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout and earned five saves along the way. Freshman Ann Spence led the team with two shots on goal, followed by senior Aubrey Swindle who had one. Five players played the full 90 minutes, including the defensive unit which lowered its goals allowed average to .40 this season.

On Sunday, the Skyhawks dropped their first match of the season in 3-0 fashion to the league-lead Mountain Lions. UCCS held a 12-8 advantage in shots despite Fort Lewis outshooting the home team 7-5 in the second half. The Mountain Lions owned an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior Elizabeth David led the team with two shots on goal, followed by sophomore Josie Coulter who had one. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for five saves, four of which came from Bravin in the first half.

Scouting No. 5 Colorado Mesa
The Mavericks moved to 9-0-1 over the weekend after tying with MSU Denver, 1-1. Colorado Mesa has racked up six shutouts on the year, holding their opponents to .40 goals per game while averaging 3.00 on their side of the ball. They are outshooting their foes 21.5 to 5.3. Individually, Sauvelyne Randel leads the team with eight goals to go along with a pair of assists for 18 points—second in the conference. Haley Kiasner is leading the team and the league with six assists on the year. Solid goalkeeping compliments the offensive prowess with Keely Wieczorek leading the conference at .43 goals allowed per game.

Fort Lewis is 20-18-7 all-time against Colorado Mesa and owns a 13-8-1 record on Dirks Field. Despite the advantage in the historical series, the Skyhawks have dropped the last three meetings. Last year, Fort Lewis fell by a 2-0 final in Grand Junction.

Scouting Westminster University
The Griffins are 4-4-2 this season and 2-2-1 in conference play. Last week, the team fell to MSU Denver (1-0) before playing to a scoreless draw against Colorado Christian. The Griffins are averaging 2.00 goals per game while holding their opponents to 1.30 per game. Westminster averages 16.7 shots per game compared to 9.0 for the opposition. Cassidy Orr is leading the team with five goals, followed by Necie Gubler who has four goals and three assists for a team-high 11 points. Mashaun Estridge is the leading goalkeeper for Westminster, starting in nine matches with a goals-against average of 1.60.

Fort Lewis is 1-6-2 all-time against Westminster. The lone win game in the series opener on September 27, 2015. Last season, the Skyhawks fell in a 2-1 final on the road. Senior Hannah Paschke scored for the Skyhawks on a header from distance.

Around the RMAC
The league is represented on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll by Colorado Mesa which sits at No. 5 with a 9-0-1 record. Mines dropped two spots to No. 18 following a 1-0-1 weekend at home. In the South Central Region, Colorado Mesa and Mines are first and third, respectively, followed by UCCS (4th), Regis (5th), MSU Denver (7th), and Fort Lewis (10th).

Mesa leads the conference in goals per game (3.00) and goals allowed per game (.40). Fort Lewis ranks second in goals allowed per game (.64). Regis' Natalie Bunch leads the conference with 10 goals per game. Swindle is tied for second in the league with three game-winning goals.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is off to its best start since 2011 with a 5-1-5 record, averaging 1.55 goals per game compared to a mark of less than one goal per game last season. Fort Lewis is one win away from matching last year's win total with seven regular season matches remaining on the schedule and has already surpassed last year's goals total (16) with 17 thus far. The Skyhawks are also holding their opponents to an impressive average of .64  goals per game. 13 players have scored goals this season, led by Swindle who has three. Haley Stafford and Swindle lead the team with three assists each, followed by Elizabeth David and Sabrina Reyes who have a pair. Katlyn Rosenbaum and Bravin have split time at goalkeeper and combine for a .64 goals-against average. Bravin has faced 56 shots and owns a 3-1-3 record.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will be back on the road next week to face Black Hills State and Regis University. The team will head to Spearfish for a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday, followed by a noon Sunday contest in Denver.
