Skyhawks pull off 3-2 upset over No. 5 ThunderWolves at home

DURANGO, Colo. – Tomas Duenes put the Skyhawks in front early while David Citron tacked on a second goal just before the intermission, and the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team used its dominant first-half performance to hold back fifth-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo and hand the ThunderWolves their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss of the season with a 3-2 victory on Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks bounce back from Thursday's loss and move up to 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play. Taking just its second loss of the season, CSU Pueblo falls to 11-2-1 and 5-1 in league contests.

"That was a huge win against a great team, and a really great response from Thursday," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "To be out in front 2-0 in the first half and pick up the third goal early in the second really showed our mentality and that these guys gave it everything they had. I felt like there was no letting up across the match and I'm happy with the performance and that we could defend Dirks Field."

It was an offensive duel on Dirks Field led by Fort Lewis 13 to 12 in total shots and nine to five in shots on goal while both sides took an even three corner kicks.

In the 20th minute, the ThunderWolves committed a foul nearly 25 yards out from goal. Duenes took full advantage of the opportunity provided The Pack and placed the ensuing free kick inside the left post for the match's first goal.

As time dwindled down and the Skyhawks offense maintained pressure, the ThunderWolves finally cracked. A corner from the far side provided Fort Lewis with a loose ball inside the box and Citron struck for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead in favor of FLC.

Out of the half, Fort Lewis picked up right where they left off, and Gabriel Legendre found himself one-on-one with The Pack's goalkeeper inside of the box. Legendre broke left and struck right for the Skyhawks' third unanswered goal.

CSU Pueblo rallied back to out-shoot FLC nine shots to six across the second half including all five shots on goal. Shjon Andrews and Caio Oliveira scored goals in the 52nd and 86th minutes but could not find the equalizer in the final minutes.
