Hjalmarsson’s dominant performance guides Fort Lewis to commanding 5-2 victory over Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – Simply put, Anton Hjalmarsson could not be stopped. Racking up six total points on two goals and two assists throughout the contest, Hjalmarsson was the driving force behind the Fort Lewis men's soccer team's 5-2 rout over Colorado School of Mines Friday evening from a brisk Dirks Field.

"Anton was special tonight, he's so difficult for anyone to defend at any point in time," head coach David Oberholtzer commented.

With tonight's win, the Skyhawks advance to 9-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, and have taken sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Mines falls to 4-5-5 overall and 3-3-1 in league play.

"Collectively, I thought we got off to a great start with the two early goals but then we took our foot off the gas a bit. But, coming out of the second half they tested us, and we responded extremely well after that. From an attacking point, tonight we were just super dangerous and efficient in front of the goal. It's a great win and I'm happy for the guys but now we need to focus on Sunday."

It was all Fort Lewis from the get-go when Loic Jean-Baptiste, at the 1:24 minute mark and assisted by Hjalmarsson, was left wide-open from 12 yards out and struck a rocket into the back of the net. All of 2:31 seconds later, it was Jean-Baptiste who fed Hjalmarsson to drive untouched into the box before beating the CSM goalkeeper to his left for the second goal of the match before the four-minute mark.

Mines was able to force a stalemate for the remainder of the half, even putting the pressure on Fort Lewis as the Orediggers tallied seven shots to FLC's four and took three corners to FLC's none. Out of the intermission, Mines broke the shutout in the 58th minute when John Burnett provided service to Quin Collins nearly 20 yards who found the edge inside the right post for the score.

The single-goal deficit lasted all of just two minutes before Hjalmarsson drove into the box to pull three defenders, including the keeper, and find Gabriel Legendre unchecked left of the penalty line for the easy one-touch goal. Hjalmarsson continued his reign as he drove into the box past his defender in the 69th minute and just as the Mines keeper made a break for the ball, stretched for one final touch to punch it into the left corner of the net.

In the 81st minute, Emmett Layman took a corner from the left side, Jakob Larson met the ball with a header on the opposite side of the box, and Matt Baldridge used a header of his own to find the back of the net for the three-goal lead and his first of the season. Mines' Chris Seery tacked on one final goal just over a minute later with an assist credited to Maxwell Stultz.
