Ford's early goal not enough in 2-1 loss to Regis

DENVER, Colo. – Senior McKenna Ford scored her first goal of the season to open the match, but the Rangers tallied two goals in the second half to secure a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers improved to 11-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play while the Skyhawks dropped to 7-3-5, 3-3-3 RMAC. Fort Lewis ended the match with a 19-11 advantage in shots and the teams were even in shots on goal with eight apiece.

"Both teams played excellent football today. I felt like we controlled the majority of the game, but Regis is so dynamic in the attacking third," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We had a lot of great performances today, and the back kept us organized. We are proud of the team. They continue to challenge us to learn every day.

Freshman Ann Spence led the team with four shots and three shots on goal, followed by junior Sabrina Reyes and senior Aubrey Swindle who each recorded three shots. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for six saves, Rosenbaum making four in the second half.

The Skyhawks wasted no time taking a one-goal advantage thanks to Ford's goal just 41 seconds into the match. Gomez made her way to the near corner for a set-piece opportunity and sent the ball into the box. After a minor deflection, the ball found Ford near the right post. The senior placed a right-footed shot top right to put Fort Lewis ahead 1-0. Freshman Amber Otts had the next shot attempt for the Skyhawks, followed by the match's third by Reyes in the 10th minute.

Regis recorded its first shot in the 23rd minute, an attempt that resulted in a save for Bravin. The Rangers would put one more shot on goal, but the Skyhawks ended the half with an 11-4 shots advantage and a 1-0 lead.

The second half began much like the first, but this time it would be Regis who secured a quick goal. A long pass found the Regis forward open on the left side of the goal. She side-stepped the crashing Fort Lewis defender and fed the ball to an awaiting Ranger that was positioned in front of the net. In a one-on-one chance against Rosenbaum, the Regis attacker placed a goal high left to tie things up. The go-ahead goal for Regis came in the 48th minute after an initial save by Rosenbaum bounced to the feet of Sarah Wynn who took a one-touch shot for the 2-1 lead.

The following 20 minutes saw shots from junior Danielle Gomez and Swindle, one of which rattled off the woodwork to hold the score at 2-1. The Rangers looked to have a promising chance to add another goal to their total after a foul in the box set up a penalty kick in the 69th minute. The Regis player settled in to take the shot but sent it well high to maintain the 2-1 match. Swindle had the Skyhawks' final shot of the match after lining one up from distance. A diving save from the Regis keeper pushed the ball wide right, and time ultimately expired in a 2-1 final.
