Women's soccer earns seventh shutout of the year in 1-0 defeat of Cougars

DURANGO, Colo. – The Skyhawks women's soccer defense earned its seventh shutout of the year, and junior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein backed them up with her team-high fourth goal of the season to pick up a 1-0 win over Colorado Christian University on Thursday.

Fort Lewis improved to 8-3-5 overall and 4-3-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Colorado Christian dipped to 3-8-4, 1-6-3 RMAC.

The Skyhawks outshot the Cougars 15-3 for the match, including a 7-0 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Rozlin Gomez led the team with three shots, followed by four players with three apiece. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the win. Freshman Amber Otts and sophomore Rachel Peebles each played 90 minutes on defense.

Colorado Christian began the match with a high shot in the third minute, and Fort Lewis would see its first shot five minutes later. It would be freshman Ann Spence who got the look with a ball that was saved low center by the opposing keeper. The teams battled defensively throughout the half, playing evenly in the shot category despite the Skyhawks maintaining a possession edge. Sophomore Rozlin Gomez picked up the team's next shot on goal, this one in the 40th minute, resulting in another save for the Cougars keeper.

Fort Lewis saw another chance with 30 seconds to go when Gonzales crossed the ball inside to Swindle. The senior took her shot but missed wide right to preserve the tie. Meraz-Fishbein fired one final attempt to close out the half, a deep ball that carried high into the arms of the awaiting Cougars keeper. The Skyhawks held a 6-3 edge in shots for the half with three shots finding their way on goal.

Meraz-Fishbein brought the feeling of a near miss into the second half, burying her next chance in the 51st minute to give her team a 1-0 lead. The goal, Meraz-Fishbein's team-best fourth of the year, came when Spence drew the ball back to the junior 25 yards out. Meraz-Fishbein took a left-footed shot and beat the keeper high right. Spence's assist was the first of her Skyhawks career.

Despite surrendering a goal, the Colorado Christian keeper continued to impress as her saves total climbed to five with 20 minutes remaining in the match. Lending to her five saves total was a pair of attempts from freshman Ashlyn Salas and Spence to keep the offensive pressure going. Fort Lewis tallied four shots down the stretch, and the defense secured a shotless half for Colorado Christian to run the clock out on a 1-0 home win.
