No. 23 Skyhawks blank No. 17 Mavericks to capture RMAC Men’s Soccer Regular Season title

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Guided by Anton Hjalmarsson's two goals on the afternoon and Lucas Martin's second clean sheet in goal, the 23rd-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team willed its way to a stunning 3-0 shutout over 17th-ranked Colorado Mesa University on the Mavericks' home pitch to capture the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regular Season title.

"Today was just a dominant performance," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer shared. "Being picked ninth in the preseason poll definitely put a chip on this team's shoulders throughout the season. The effort, how this team went about it all season, I am just so proud of the guys."

Fort Lewis has captured its first RMAC Championship title since 2011 and moved to 10-3-4 overall while finishing the year at 6-1-3 in conference play. The Mavericks take their first conference loss of the season and drop to 10-3-5 overall and 5-1-4 in RMAC contests. FLC, having captured the number-one seed for the conference tournament, will take a first-round bye and host the winner of Thursday's match between the fourth and fifth-seeded teams next Sunday, Nov. 5, on Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks took command of the pace early and forced Colorado Mesa on its heels throughout the opening half. Fort Lewis attached the Mavericks' goal early, taking 13 of its 19 total shots in the match in the first half while focusing 10 total shots on goal.  CMU recorded 12 shots but only placed five between the posts.

Loic Jean-Baptiste ignited the FLC offense in the 27th minute when the redshirt senior drove untouched to the right side of CMU's penalty box and found a crossing Anton Hjalmarsson for the goal.

As the offensive pressure continued, Fort Lewis finally broke through again in the 37th minute. On a corner kick, David Citron provided a slicing set piece into the box and Adnan Elaqad high-pointed the ball with a header to capture the 2-0 lead and his first goal of the season.

Out of the half, Colorado Mesa found the offensive adjustment necessary to begin to force the Skyhawks into its own defending half. However, a defensive miscue in the 67th minute put Hjalmarsson one-on-one with the Mavs keeper behind the back line, and the freshman would not be denied as he found the open net and his tenth goal of the season to seal the match.

In just his second clean sheet of the season, Martin made five saves to Colorado Mesa's Diego Chavez with seven.
