No. 12 Skyhawks post 4-0 shutout, roll past Mountain Lions into RMAC Tournament Championship

DURANGO, Colo. – Energized by its largest home crowd of the season, the Fort Lewis men's soccer team answered for its mid-season loss to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Sunday evening as the 12th-ranked Skyhawks dominated the Mountain Lions in every facet to punch their ticket into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.

Fort Lewis, now 11-3-4 with the win, moves on to host 15th-ranked and third-seeded Colorado State University Pueblo (14-4-2) next Friday, Nov. 10, at 5:00 p.m. on Dirks Field to compete for the RMAC Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Tickets are available through the RMAC ticketing site and must be pre-purchased in advance. The match will also be streamed live pay-per-view on the RMAC Network.

"I thought the first half, in general, was a little sloppy and frantic from both sides... credit to UCCS for applying plenty of pressure and making it difficult," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer commented. "Loic's fantastic individual effort to get the first goal gave us momentum heading into the second half. Once they got a man down, it created opportunities and we just continued to attack. The crowd, fans, and alumni were amazing. They play such a huge role in the energy of our team, and we'll need that next Friday with another huge game against Pueblo."

Loic Jean-Baptiste was the first Skyhawk to break through in the 38th minute. The 2023 First-Team All-RMAC midfielder drove past four defenders from 40 yards out thanks to service from David Citron before striking with his right foot just beyond the penalty line for his fourth goal of the season.

While FLC entered the half with the advantage, UCCS was applying steady pressure as the Mountain Lions matched FLC's 10 shots in the opening half while leading in corner kicks 4-2. However, the Mountain Lions placed just a single shot between the posts to Fort Lewis' six.

As both teams vied for possession and momentum to start the second half, it all fell to the Skyhawks when UCCS goalkeeper Soren Russell was presented with a red card following an aggressive last-man challenge to save an open goal.

Fort Lewis then kicked the door down in the 58th minute when Jakob Larson, elevating on a corner kick sent into the box from Tomas Duenes, headed the ball uncontested into the back right corner of the net for the two-goal advantage.

From then on, the Skyhawks continued to roll with an 11-to-10 man-advantage and an electrified home crowd behind them. Freshman Emmett Layman, having not scored a goal since Oct. 6, notched his first collegiate two-goal performance tallying a pair of goals in the 66th and 78th minutes on services from Thomas Kirkham and Citron, respectively.

All told, Fort Lewis rifled off 22 total shots while placing 12 on frame. Colorado Springs took six additional shots in the second half and placed three on goal. Freshman keeper Lucas Martin registered his second-straight and third career shutout while making four saves.
