Skyhawks extend unbeaten streak to seven matches with 3-1 victory over Regis

DENVER, Colo. – Gabriel Legendre's two-goal performance proved the difference maker as the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team held off a desperate Regis University offense late to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Rangers and capture the program's third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win this season.

The Skyhawks, unbeaten through seven consecutive matches since Sep. 14, advance to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play while Regis falls to 3-7-2 and 1-2-1 through RMAC contests.

"I felt like we were pretty dominant and in control of the game today," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "From the first to last moment every one of our guys gave it everything they had. The energy on the bench was fantastic. To score three good team goals with great finishes from Tomas and Gabe and get six points on the road this weekend sets us up very well moving forward."

Fort Lewis dominated Regis in the first half seven shots to two, but by the end of the match, the Rangers led in shots 16 to 15 and shots on goal six to five. The Skyhawks, however, took 12 corner kicks to the Rangers' five while also committing 19 fouls.

Anton Hjalmarsson emerged with a 50-50 ball in the 6th minute and proceeded to outrun the Rangers defense into the penalty box. As the Regis goalkeeper moved for a save, Hjalmarsson found Tomas Duenes wide-open at the penalty line for an easy chip to capture the lead.

In the 39th minute, a misplayed pass by Regis allowed Hjalmarsson to take possession near mid-field. Seeing a driving Legendre, Hjalmarsson provided service to the Skyhawks' leading scorer roughly 25 yards out, who without hesitation, rifled the ball into the top-right corner on his first touch to extend the FLC lead.

Good things come to those who wait, and Legendre played patiently for his second chance to strike in the second half. Emmett Layman took a shot from just inside the top left corner of the box, but Regis' Cristian Sattin elevated for the save. As the shot deflected off of Sattin's gloves, Legendre was left unmarked and headed the ball into the net for his second goal of the afternoon.

The Rangers avoided the shutout by scoring in the 80th minute on a pass across the box from Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit that could not be cleared allowing Brendan O'Toole to fire it past a pair of Skyhawks.
