Second-half surge falls short as Mountain Lions elude Skyhawks in Homecoming match

DURANGO, Colo. – Quick-pace and timely shots forced the Skyhawks into an early deficit, and while the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team rebounded in the second half to close the gap, it wasn't enough as The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs found the back of the net late in the match to hold down the Skyhawks for a 3-2 victory on a frigid Thursday evening at Dirks Field.

The win lifts UCCS to 5-4-4 overall, 1-2-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches, and breaks a seven-match unbeaten streak for Fort Lewis to drop the Skyhawks to 7-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.

"I thought tonight was a great collegiate soccer game, both teams played well," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "It's such fine margins, they capitalized on a couple of mistakes, and we weren't able to do that enough. I thought we could have been a little better at breaking their pressure, but we just have to regroup and prepare for Sunday."

UCCS put the pressure on the Skyhawks across the match outshooting FLC 28-12 in total and placing 11 shots on frame to Fort Lewis' six. Additionally, Fort Lewis took seven corners to the Mountain Lions' four.

Bogdan Vedernikov and Kolby Raineri lifted UCCS to the early lead with goals scored in the 30th and 41st minute amongst the Mountain Lions' 13 first-half shots. Both goals were assisted by Alex Andersson and produced by uncleared balls following a save by the Skyhawks.

Tomas Duenes broke the shutout in the 52nd minute, striking the back-right corner of the net from the top of the box with service provided by Aymaro Vargas. UCCS' Nic Grotle broke the stalemate by taking advantage of yet another deflection off of a save in the 81st minute to extend the lead.

Kaden Schufft cut the deficit to one with a goal of his own from the penalty line in the 86th minute, the first of his career, and thus a penalty kicked beautifully saved by the Mountain Lions' Soren Russell in the 75th minute wound up being the difference in the contest.

Lucas Martin recorded career-highs in shots faced (28) and saves made with eight.

Notables
-Schufft scored the first goal of his collegiate career.
-Duenes' goal tonight brings his season total to five and places him in a two-way tie for the seventh-most in the RMAC. Additionally, Duenes' was credited for the assist on Schufft's goal bringing his season total to six: the outright second-most in the conference.
