Comeback falls short as No. 19 Rams elude No. 15 Skyhawks in season opener

PORTALES, N.M. – Shooting struggles for the Skyhawks and a first-half run by the Rams proved too difficult to overcome as the 15th-ranked Fort Lewis men's basketball team dropped its regular season opener 77-69 to 19th-ranked Angelo State University Friday evening on a neutral floor in Greyhound Arena.

"Tonight was just a great regional-caliber game," head coach Bob Pietrack commented. "They jumped on us early and we couldn't climb back into it. I have to tip my hat to Keyshawn, every time they needed a big shot, he nailed it. It's a learning experience for this new group of what it's going to take to contend with Top-25 teams."

Angelo State opened the contest with nine unanswered points before the Skyhawks finally broke the momentum on a fast-break layup out of the hands of Sekou Dembele. The Rams kept pushing, however, building up to a 14-point deficit on back-to-back three-point shots. From then on, the first half was a shot-for-shot exchange in which ASU would not allow FLC to climb any closer than an eight-point deficit.

The Rams didn't miss a beat out of the half as they forced a pair of turnovers by the Skyhawks to build the largest lead of the second half at 13 points. Pulling within six points on two occasions thanks to jump shots from Obi Agbim and Tristan Hurdle, FLC was finally able to force a one-score game – the only other time besides the opening basket for ASU – with just under ten minutes to play with a three-pointer from Samier Kinsler.

Ultimately, it was a 30-point, five-assist, two-steal, and three-rebound performance from Angelo State's Keyshawn Embery-Simpson that buried the Skyhawks. In addition, Kevon Godwin and Trey Farrer each provided double-digit scoring efforts with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Brayden Carter led Fort Lewis with 14 points and four rebounds while Agbim provided another 12 points and two assists. In addition, the Skyhawks finished the evening shooting 38.3 percent from the floor to the Rams' 52.6 percent.
