Volleyball drops road match to Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team dropped its road trip opener to Colorado School of Mines on Friday evening, falling in three sets from the Lockridge Arena in Golden.

The Skyhawks fell to 13-12 overall and 6-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Orediggers improved to 13-12, 6-7 RMAC.

Fort Lewis was limited to a .172 hitting efficiency compared to a .388 clip for Mines. The teams combined for 97 digs and 12 blocks.

Sophomore Ella Butler led the team with eight kills (.319) to go along with three blocks. Freshman Alina Nunez followed with seven kills (.333) while contributing seven digs. Junior Sarah Wilkey recorded a match-high 18 digs, followed by senior Lauren Shea who had eight. Junior Natalia Lambos dished out 29 assists.

"We struggled offensively. When we had opportunities, our swings weren't landing," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Ella's blocking and offense helped us stay in it, and Alina had an impressive all-around performance. We need to reset quickly for tomorrow's match."

In set one, Fort Lewis quickly went ahead 6-3 in part to service pressure and a presence at the net. From there, the teams played to tied scores to the midway point of the set. Mines grabbed a lead with a  5-1 scoring run before Butler earned a side-out kill to make it 20-14. The Skyhawks scored once more down the stretch, but the set would end in a 25-15 score.

The second set, the Skyhawks saw a 13-8 advantage with a run from Shea at the service line. The Orediggers battled back to pull within one, but a kill by senior Chay Swenson made it a three-point lead. The teams played even into the late portion of the set, and Mines found set point at 24-23. The Skyhawks picked up a block by Butler and Swenson to extend the set, but a pair of attacking errors gave Mines a two-set lead.

The Orediggers carried the momentum into the third set, quickly building a 6-1 lead before Swenson earned a side out kill. Fort Lewis pulled within three, but the home team went on to score four-straight to see a 13-6 advantage. The Skyhawks strung together three points with Butler at the line, making it a 18-13. Freshman Jordyn Romano scored the final point for the Skyhawks, and Mines closed it out with a pair of kills to take the match.
