Shea's career night leads Skyhawks volleyball to home win over Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – Guided by career numbers from senior right-side hitter Lauren Shea and junior setter Natalia Lambos, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team earned a five-set win over Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday evening.

Fort Lewis improved to 12-11 on the year and 5-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Adams State dropped to 7-16 overall and 3-8 in league play.

Shea was the primary offensive weapon for the Skyhawks in the win, turning in a career-high 20 kills on 34 swings (.382) to go along with nine digs and three blocks. Lambos, the reigning RMAC Setter of the Week, did well to feed the hot hand and racked up a career-best 58 assists. Sophomore Ella Butler earned 13 kills on 24 attempts (.417), while junior Alexis Hobie put away 15 kills on 40 chances. Junior Sarah Wilkey led the team with 18 digs and two service aces.

As a team, the Skyhawks hit .255 for the match compared to a .214 clip for the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis out-dug Adams State 61-52 and the teams combined for 17 blocks and 11 aces.

"Tonight's match was a battle of momentum. We kept fighting to stay in rhythm, and I am glad to see our team come out on top," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We had some great offensive and defensive plays, and I was glad to see Lauren perform at such a high level. She had an amazing night and was the steady force that we needed."

Fort Lewis got off to a hot start in the first set, going up 10-4 with kills from freshman Logan Spragg and Shea. The lead carried into the midway point of the set with a block by senior JJ Curry and Butler making it 14-8. The Skyhawks benefited from a late 5-1 scoring to see set point, and Butler closed it out with a kill to give her team the 25-15 win.

The second set was more evenly matched in the early goings before the Grizzlies pressed ahead 10-5. Curry earned a side out kill, followed by a block by Spragg and Shea, as Fort Lewis pulled within one at 11-10. The Skyhawks tied it up and took an eventual 15-14 lead thanks to a Butler kill, but the Grizzlies took it back and extended their lead to three points. Fort Lewis strung together a few points late, but an ace ended the set in a 25-21 score to tie the match.

The Skyhawks jumped ahead in the third with a 4-0 run extending their lead to 10-4. The teams traded points from there, but Fort Lewis remained ahead thanks to kills from freshman Jordyn Romano and senior Chay Swenson. Adams State earned a kill to trail 22-17, but Fort Lewis closed the set out with kills from Butler and Swenson to take a lead in the match.

The lead swapped sides in the fourth set, but the Grizzlies were able to find a 13-9 lead thanks to a combination of kills and Skyhawks errors. Fort Lewis couldn't muster a push to string points together despite inspired play from Swenson and Shea, and Adams State made its way to set point. A service ace that trickled off the tape closed it out and sent the match to a decisive fifth set.

In the condensed fifth set, Fort Lewis earned an early 5-2 lead with a pair of kills from Shea. The Grizzlies got a pair back before Butler earned a side out kill. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 10-6 with Butler at the service line, but the Grizzlies scored two to pull within striking distance. Fort Lewis fired back with four-straight points to make it set point, and an eventual service error on Adams State ended it in a 15-10 score.
